Amazon is selling the Ecobee4 at its Black Friday...

If you missed the Ecobee4 sale the first time around, Amazon has you covered. Today the retailer is selling the Ecobee4 for $200. That's the same price we saw at Lowe's and others (including Amazon) on Black Friday. Usually this latest model of the Ecobee sells for the MSRP of $249.

The big change with the Ecobee4 compared to its predecessor is built-in Alexa Voice Service. Prior to this, the Ecobee integrated with Alexa devices like most other smart home devices. With Alexa built-in, you can use the smart thermometer to get news, set timers, and many of the other things you can ask of an Echo device. The Ecobee4 works with the Google Assistant if you've got a Google Home device, too.

Why does Apple hate the adjective ‘the’?

Why does Apple hate the adjective “the”? I notice in the press release for the iMac Pro, it’s referred to as “the iMac Pro,” but just "iMac Pro" as in “Apple today released iMac Pro.”

Also, the iPhone is not “the iPhone,” but just "iPhone." The iPad isn’t “the iPad,” simply "iPad." The Apple Watch isn’t “the Apple Watch,” just "Apple Watch." Maybe it’s the teacher in me, but that missing “the” bothers me.

Drone fans: FAA registration is back in force

We know that a lot of Apple World Today readers are techies who love drones, so this news will be of importance to you. As of yesterday, legislation was signed by President Trump that reverses an earlier court ruling and brings back the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) registration requirement for UAS -- unmanned aerial systems, AKA drones.

If you registered a drone during the days when it was previously required, you don't need to register again because this bill reverses what was known as the "John Taylor case". However, if you asked for a refund and asked to be removed from the registration list, you will need to re-register if you received confirmation from the FAA that your request to be removed from the database was honored.

Registration is required for any flying device that weighs over 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and uses a ground-control system with a communications link. This includes RC transmitters or Wi-Fi links such as those used for controlling a...

ProtonMail Bridge Lets You Use Apple Mail as a Client

ProtonMail is an end-to-end encrypted email service based in Switzerland. Since its debut, it has become a viable email service for those wanting email security. Until now, you could only access your ProtonMail account via the web app, and an iOS app. But ProtonMail Bridge finally lets you bring it to the desktop. Bridge acts as a local email server using IMAP and SMTP. It runs in the background and interacts with email clients on your computer. All encryption and decryption happens locally. Benefits include full text search, multiple accounts, and import/export of emails. It uses JavaScript cryptography, and is open source. The software is only available for users with paid accounts, however. You can download it here...

Review: Optoma NuForce BE2 Wireless In-Ear Headphones

Recently, we reviewed the Optoma NuForce HEM Dynamic IEM and found that although it sounded good, its narrow sound channels didn't hold its ear tips well enough, making it all too possible to end up with ear tips left deep inside your ear canals. This week, we're trying a new headphone from Optoma's NuForce line — the BE2 Wireless. We find that the BE2 is very affordable, sounds good, and keeps its ear tips where they're supposed to be.{/exp:char_limit}
