Rent or Own Movies and TV Shows With Redbox On Demand

Redbox is testing a new digital service called Redbox On Demand. It’s in beta, and only a small number of customers can try it out. But it lets you rent or own the latest movies and certain TV shows to complement your physical purchases. You can stream or download movies and watch from your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, or Apple TV. Unlike Netflix or Hulu, it’s not a subscription service either. It’s purely transactional, and you pay for what you want. Prices vary depending on your selection, but movie rental generally starts at US$1.99, while movie purchases start around US$3.99. TV episodes can be purchased starting at US$1.99, and entire seasons can be had starting at US$12.99.

Mac: Satechi Aluminum Type-C Clamp Hub Pro for iMac

While the new iMac Pro lacks the internal expansion capabilities of prior “Pro” desktop Macs, Satechi at least has some of that covered with its new Aluminum Type-C Clamp Hub Pro. Available for pre-order today and shipping in January, Satechi’s new hub connects to one of your iMac’s Thunderbolt 3 ports and then clamps onto the bottom of your iMac — either the 2017 iMac Pro, iMac Retina 4K, and 27-inch iMac Retina 5K — and provides a front-facing data-only USB-C port, three front-facing USB 3.0 ports with up to 5 Gbps data transfer speeds, and a Micro/SD card reader.

Opinion: The 10-Core iMac Pro sans additional...

With the iMac Pro officially going on sale yesterday, we now know more about Apple’s powerful, professional-oriented all-in-one desktop. The most exciting new thing about the iMac Pro, besides the fact that it comes with a cool new Space Gray housing and matching accessories, is that it’s the first iMac model to feature more than a quad-core processor.

Multicore processors are all the rage these days for so-called prosumers, and for good reason — they provide a lot more processing power for apps that can wield that additional power in parallel, and the cost-barrier to entry, led by AMD’s Ryzen CPUs, has been lowered. Video editing workflows with Final Cut Pro X instantly...

The beautiful lofree Four Seasons Mechanical Keyboard. Photo ©2017, Steven Sande

Back in March of 2017, I had the pleasure of reviewing the lofree Mechanical Keyboard, a retro-themed keyboard that garnered a lot of fans and backers on Indiegogo. lofree is back with a new version of the keyboard that has a slight redesign based on customer feedback and comes in four different models to capture the essence of the four seasons.

As with the first Indiegogo campaign, the Four Seasons Mechanical Keyboard will ship — as of this posting, it has reached 794 percent of its goal, and will be available in April 2018. Early backers have until the end of December to get one of the keyboards for as little as US$74.

Review: TEAC AI-101DA Integrated Amplifier with USB...

Recently we've reviewed some big, expensive, powerful speaker amplifiers. We've found that big, expensive, powerful gear often sounds very good. It is important, however, to remember that audio equipment can sound good even though it's small, inexpensive, and relatively low-powered. Sometimes a little box can do it all. Today we're looking at a tiny, affordable integrated amplifier from Japanese manufacturer TEAC. We think that for many users, TEAC's AI-101DA may be the "Swiss Army Knife" of stereo components.{/exp:char_limit}

Grand Court nixes U.S. government’s efforts to back...

The European Union’s Grand Court has rejected an U.S. government request to intervene in Apple’s fight against an EU order on back taxes. The Cupertino, California-based company is appealing an order to pay approximately $15.3 billion in back taxes to Ireland due to illegal tax breaks.

The Obama administration disagreed with the move, saying the EU was trying to take money the U.S. should receive. A Grand Court judge says the U.S. failed to prove it had a “direct interest in the result of the case.”

The European Commission, Europe’s anti-trust and consumer investigation agency, claimed that Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have attracted...

iMac Pro first impressions: Beauty of a beast

Rene Ritchie, iMore:

This isn’t a beloved tower reimagined inside Darth Vader’s helmet — an OpenCL monster designed for a future that never quite materialized. This is the same iMac many of us already know and love, just gutted of its consumer-grade engine and rebuilt for a very different kind of pro. The kind that was already sold on the all-in-one but always wished it was hit by enough gamma rays to make it more hulkingly pro.

And that’s exactly what Apple is delivering: A sleek space-gray chassis filled to the aluminum limit with next-generation Intel, AMD, and Apple muscle. Starting at $4999.

This is richly researched, well written. Rene has pulled together a real technologist’s view of the iMac Pro. There’s a lot to learn here, especially the deep dive into the Intel Xeon W processors at the heart of the iMac Pro.

Just go read it. Does this guy ever sleep?

When Apple finally put its iMac Pro on sale yesterday, there was a lot of discussion about the concept of a non-upgradable pro machine.

Apple Lisa: The computer that was a proving ground...

Stephen Hackett, MacStories:

When thinking about the earliest days of Apple, it’s easy to recall the Apple I, the Apple II line and the Macintosh. However, there’s one more computer that defined Apple’s early years. This computer was ground-breaking but incredibly expensive, and exposed many things wrong within Apple itself.

The Lisa launched 35 years ago next month. Today, it is mostly considered as a precursor to Mac. While that is true, it doesn’t come close to doing this computer justice.

Apple Lisa was an incredibly important part of Apple’s history. This is a terrific read. Don’t miss the embedded and linked videos.

India will raise its import tax on electronics to prioritize goods manufactured in the country. The cell phone tax increase from 10% to 15% could hurt Apple’s struggling market share in the region, notes Seeking Alpha.

Samsung assembles most of the cell phones it sells in the country within India. Apple only assembles the iPhone SE in India and imports the rest. The tech giant and government officials have held talks about the iPhone maker expanding its manufacturing presence in the country, but Apple wants incentives and tax breaks — two things the Indian government has resisted so far.

Apple patent involves a bumper system for surface...

Apple is always looking for more ways to minimize potential damage to iPhones, iPads, and Mac laptops. A new patent filing (number 20170355507) is for “active surface protection for portable electronic devices.”

The invention would provide Apple devices with one or more bumpers that are operable to transition between a stowed position and a deployed position. The bumpers may protect the surfaces of the device from impact is dropped.

The bumpers may form portions of side corners or other portions of the portable electronic device in the stowed position. In transitioning from the stowed position to the deployed position, the bumpers may rotate and/or translate.

Of course, Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Many are for inventions that never see the light of day. However, you never can tell which ones will materialize in a real product.

Sony’s XBR-X900E-Series TV is a great companion for...

After purchasing my Apple TV 4K, I began searching for a 4K/HDR television, so I could truly enjoy the set top box’s ability to show movies and shows in 4K HDR quality. I don’t have the moolah for an OLED TV set, so after much research, I settled on Sony’s XBR-X900E-Series 55-inch—Class HDR UHD Smart LED TV.

It’s a top notch HDR TV that occupies the sweet spot between performance, price, and size. I wanted a 65-inch TV set, but my wife is insistent that anything bigger than 55 inches is too big for our living room. And, as the saying goes, “if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

So 55 inches it was.

The display

The X900E’s display is gorgeous. It’s not OLED quality, but comes close. UHD image clarity is excellent, the contrast ratio is very good, brightness is superb, and HDR allows for bright, vivid colors. The Sony set boasts the 4K X-Reality Pro Image Processor, 4K HDR Processor X1 , and TRILUMINOS Panel, and Full Array Local...

AppleCare for iMac Pro priced at $169

It’ll be 169 clams for AppleCare+ coverage for your new iMac Pro.

Apple has announced that AppleCare+, which extends your iMac Pro’s warranty from one to three years, will retail for $169. This is cheaper than the AppleCare+ policy for an iPhone X and also reduces the cost of some repairs. If you have a Mac notebook and the display fails, for example, AppleCare+ more than pays for itself.

By comparison, you’ll pay $129 for an iPhone 8, $149 for an iPhone 8 Plus, and $199 for an iPhone X. For a 15-inch MacBook Pro you’ll pay a whopping $379—more than double the cost of AppleCare+ for the iMac Pro.

So, not too terrible for an extended warranty and hopefully this comes in handy.

First Impressions of the New iMac Pro

Apple held a small press event yesterday in New York City to officially unveil the new iMac Pros, which went on sale today.

It is significantly more expensive than its non-pro iMac siblings — the iMac Pro starts at $4999, but most configurations will cost significantly more. But make no mistake — if you buy one of these, you’re getting true professional performance for your money. You’re not just getting (admittedly gorgeous) space black anodized aluminum.

The entire lineup of iMac Pros is based on Intel’s new Xeon W CPUs, and is entirely SSD based. There are no configurations with spinning hard drives or Fusion drives — according to Apple, the system architecture is designed only to work with SSDs for internal storage. These components are all high-end: the RAM is 2666 MHz DDR 4 ECC; the SSD storage has...

Apple’s podcast analytics service is now in beta

At WWDC this year, Apple announced it would soon offer its own podcast analytics service for show creators who publish on Apple Podcasts. Today, that service has launched into beta, offering podcasters the ability to track unique devices and playback metrics for their podcasts, including when listeners drop off in the middle of a show.

This is great news. It only tracks iOS 11 on mobile devices, but people move to the latest iOS pretty quick on Apple devices, so that shouldn’t be much of a drawback.

Amazon will sell Apple TV again

Amazon.com Inc will start selling Google Chromecast and Apple TV, which compete against its Fire TV, on its online store, an Amazon spokeswoman told Reuters on Thursday.

This is great news for Apple. Amazon is a huge reseller of products and it has a very strong brand—I would think a lot of people will go to Amazon to purchase Apple TV. Amazon Prime Video is also now available on Apple TV, so the two companies are mending the fences.

Review: JBL LSR305 5” Two-Way Powered Studio Monitor

We have reviewed several of JBL's speakers and headphones over the years. Many have touted the "JBL House Sound," but we've never really talked about what that means. Though JBL's current product line includes some interesting consumer lifestyle products, the company's history is in pro audio — chances are that the last movie theater or concert venue you visited used JBL speakers or, at least, many of the songs in your library were mixed using JBL speakers. One of the most important products in JBL's pro audio lineup, the entry-level LSR305, has become more than just a studio monitor — it's become a go-to recommendation for new audiophiles looking for their first set of high-quality speakers. We think they've earned their reputation as one of the best value-for-dollar speakers available.{/exp:char_limit}
