DearAOL.com Launches Awareness of AOL's New eMail Tax
DearAOL.com Launches Awareness of AOL's New eMail Tax For those that don't know, AOL is going to start charging outside senders to send email to AOL users. The AFL-CIO, EFF, freepress, and many, many others are taking a stand with an open letter to AOL asking them re-consider this decision. What's This About? In February 2006, AOL announced that it would accept payment for incoming emails. For these certified emails, it would skip its usual anti-spam filters and guarantee delivery for cash. Our coalition believes that the free passage of email between Internet users is a vital part of what makes the Internet work. When ISPs demand a cut of "pay-to-send" email, they're raising tollbooths on the open Net, interfering with the passage of data by demanding protection money at the gates of their customers' computers. What can you do? Learn about AOL's email tax at: http://www.dearaol.com/faq Learn what you can do to take action against this: http://www.dearaol.com/action But whatever you...

Intego Security Memo: Mac OS X Metadata Exploit
INTEGO SECURITY MEMO - FEBRUARY 24, 2006 MAC OS X METADATA EXPLOIT Exploit: Mac OS X metadata exploit Discovered: February 24, 2006 Risk: Critical Description: Compressed archives can contain resource forks and HFS metadata stored in an invisible "__MACOSX" folder. Data contained in these resource forks and HFS metadata can mask the real type of a file in the archive, causing shell scripts to execute if users double-click such files. The risk inherent in this exploit is that any compressed archive may contain such resource forks and metadata, and that decompressing an archive and double-clicking a resulting file can execute a shell script contained in the invisible __MACOSX folder. Safari users who have not turned off auto-execution of "safe" files will download the malicious Zip archive, which will then execute. Even if this option is turned off, the Zip archive will download, and a user may double-click it to decompress it, then double-click its contents, causing the file to execute...

Information on Mac OS X Trojan Horse
MacTech Alert: Information on Mac OS X Trojan Horse There's a been a lot of hoopla about the "first" Trojan Horse on Mac OS X. As those that have been around the industry for years know, this is not the first infection on the Mac, but the Mac is well known for not being ladened with virus, malware, adware, trojan horses, and worms. As first reported by readers of MacRumors.com, and discussed with great detail on Ambrosia Software's web site at: (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102379) a file called "latestpics.tgz" was posted, claiming to be pictures of "Mac OS X Leopard." For those of you that don't know, Leopard is the code name for the next major release of Mac OS X, version 10.5. Most in the industry are calling this a trojan horse, but some are calling it a virus (although it's non-virulant.) It has been nick-named the "Oompa-Loompa" (aka "OSX/Oomp-A") for because it is checking for the attribute "oompa." It's also being called "OSX/Leap-A" or "OSX/Leap"....
