iFixIt tears down the new MacBook Air
The gang at iFixIt have torn apart the updated MacBook Air and say that it really does have some new stuff inside. Here's their summary: "Apple tweaked the SSD form factor and switched to a different flash controller. The new unit is based on a SandForce SATA-III controller chip, but stamped with Toshiba markings. It's still removable, meaning that folks will be able to upgrade the drive once third-party components become available. While the board bears visual similarities to mSATA, it is not using the same connector. "Unfortunately, the RAM is still not upgradeable. We highly recommend anyone purchasing an Air upgrade to 8 GB at purchase time, because it won't be possible after the fact. "A word to the wise: The new MagSafe 2 connector won't work with Apple's currently shipping Cinema displays unless you buy their $10 adapter. Will Apple update the Cinema display, start including an adapter with the display, or force people to remember to buy the extra adapter? "We were expecting...

The ITC rejected an investigation of the five former Google patents, said HTC spokeswoman Jessica Pan. "We believe the judge's decision is erroneous as a matter of law and will appeal the ruling to the Commission," the company added in a statement. "We look forward to presenting our case on the remaining patents to the judge at trial later this year." Last December Apple won an exclusion order banning the importation of HTC Android devices at the International Trade Commission. The ITC found that Android's messaging app and browser infringed upon Apple patent #5,946,647. On Wednesday Apple won its request to...

Ovumn on WWDC: what Apple must do to maintain its performance
At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference today, Apple is expected to announce several new products and advancements to existing lines from across its portfolio of smart devices. Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum, highlights what Apple needs to do to maintain its impressive performance: "To start, Apple needs to do two things in the TV space. Firstly, create a subscription model that combines the back catalog of Netflix with the timely content of Hulu for a single price. Secondly, it should create an software development kit followed by an App Store for the Apple TV device to allow third party apps to proliferate there as they have on the iPhone and iPad. What it does not need to do is launch a television set. "Elsewhere, Apple needs to begin to evolve the iOS user interface on iPhone and iPad, which has been the inspiration for many other platforms, but at five years old it’s beginning to show its age. Proper support for widgets (including third party widgets), whether...

Average price of tablets drops in 2012
According to recently released figures in the IMS Research (http://imsresearch.com) quarterly tablet PC tracker, tablet ASPs (average selling prices) have declined by 21%in a single year to US$386 in the first quarter of 2012. The decline in price reflects intense competition in the tablet market. With the release of the new iPad, Apple reduced the entry price of the iPad 2 to $399. This lower price has meant greater price pressure on its rivals, forcing them also to reduce price to make their products competitive, says IMS Research. Despite booming shipments of low-end tablets, vendors of this tier have also pulled the average price down. Low-end tablets typically have prices below $200. However, brands like   the white-box tables have lowered prices below this average and as a result have won widespread adoption in this quarter, primarily in emerging countries. "There are few innovations from vendors to differentiate their tablets; low price seems to be the major factor to attract...

Judge questions Apple fine in Australian 4G case
Last week it was announced that Apple will pay more than $2 million as penalty after agreeing it misled the public in Australia by selling its new iPad as 4G-compatible, according to "The Australian" (http://macte.ch/T9XuT). Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission have asked Justice Bromberg to approve the proposed fine for misleading and deceptive conduct. However, Justice Bromberg told the parties he was unhappy with the lack of information provided to the court about Apple's financial position, the number of iPads that had been sold using the "Wi-Fi + 4G" name and how many had been returned, and the difference between how the iPads would work on a 3G or 4G network, reports "The Age" (http://macte.ch/zPYEc). "Surely the parties can at least put before the court some meaningful facts that identify a disparity between the products,'' he said. Alan Archibald, QC, acting for Apple, told the court it was irrelevant how many iPads had been sold or returned because...

Apple plans new tracking tool for apps
Apple plans to release a new way for mobile app developers to track who uses their software, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/BGIZk), quoting unnamed "people briefed on Apple's plans. The "Journal" describes it as "the company's latest attempt to balance developers' appetite for targeting data with consumers' unease over how it is used." The new tool aims to better protect user privacy than existing approaches, the article says. No release date is mentioned. Last year, Apple gave developers a head-up about using UDIDs (Unique Device Identifier Numbers) via iOS documentation. Because the UDID is unique to each iPhone and iPad, it can provide a means for third-party advertisers looking for a way to track a mobile device users' online activities. Because the UDID is not alterable or deletable by a iPhone or iPad user, some have referred to the UDID as a "supercookie." Such tracking has caused concerns among privacy advocates because it could give personal information...

Samsung suing Australian patent commissioner
Another day, another lawsuit. Samsung is suing the Australian patent commissioner in the latest twist in its intellectual property clash with Apple, reports the "BBC" (http://macte.ch/9V5dS). The South Korean firm is seeking to invalidate four patents which Apple claimed had been infringed by Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, the article adds. Samsung alleges that the patents should never have been granted as they duplicated earlier intellectual property filings. A judge will hold a hearing about the matter on June 25. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.

Apple to pay $2.25 million for 'misleading the public'
Apple will pay more than $2 million as penalty after agreeing it misled the public in Australia by selling its new iPad as 4G-compatible, according to "The Australian" (http://macte.ch/T9XuT). The article adds that Apple has agreed to settle a case brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that alleged the new iPad could not access local 4G networks, despite being sold as the new iPad "with WiFi + 4G". The ACCC, the country's consumer watchdog had taken Apple to court for false advertising because the tablet computer doesn't work on Australia's 4G network. Apple's lawyers said they were willing to publish a clarification, but said the company didn't mislead customers. On its website, Apple did state that 4G LTE is only supported on selected networks in the US and Canada.

CIRP: Sales of new iPad, iPad 2 roughly similar
According to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the breakdown in sales of the iPad 2 and the new iPad between February and April of 2012 were roughly similar, reports "AllThingsD" (http://macte.ch/2NeNP). The research firm (http://macte.ch/x3TAR) says that during that period, the new iPad accounted for 59 % of total sales, while the iPad 2, which costs $100 less, accounted for 41%. "The lower price of the iPad 2 seems to be attracting many new buyers, and bringing thriftier customers into the fold," CIRP partner Josh Lowitz told AllThingsD. "In contrast with how customers behave when Apple launches new iPhone models, our data suggests that a lot of iPad buyers bought iPad 2s right up to and after the launch of the new iPad."
