Apple Asks Customers for Vision Pro Feedback Apple has been soliciting Vision Pro feedback since the device launched, but this week, the company has picked up on sending out surveys. We've had several reports from Vision Pro customers who have been asked to share their thoughts about the device.
Apple asks about Vision Pro satisfaction, environment usage, favorite features, what it's being used for, how often it's used, and how long usage sessions last. Apple also asks about guest mode and who else uses the Vision Pro, which is a curious question because it's not at all set up for multi-person usage. Some of the questions:
Overall, how satisfied are you with your Vision Pro?
What is your favorite feature or aspect of Apple Vision Pro so far?
How often do you use your Apple Vision Pro?
For how long do you typically wear your Apple Vision Pro before you decide to take it off?
Who else uses your Vision Pro?
Before taking the survey, did you know that you can let others use your Apple Vision Pro with the Guest User feature?
Which of these activities do you do regularly on your Vision Pro? (with a long list of options)
What types of video content are you most interested in watching on Apple Vision Pro?
When using your Apple Vision Pro, how often are you immersed in an Environment?
Whenever you're using apps on Apple Vision Pro, how often do you multitask?
Have you set up your Persona to use in FaceTime?
How satisfied are you with how your Persona looks on Apple Vision Pro?
Where is your Apple Vision Pro used most?
Which of these accessories do you use with your Apple Vision Pro? (with a list that includes mice, cases, AirPods Pro, and more).
What head band do you use most often with your Apple Vision Pro?
How often do you use your Apple Vision Pro while the battery is connected to a power source?
The survey is long and in-depth, and also goes into the other devices that each respondent owns.
The uptick in Vision Pro survey distribution comes as there have been reports about waning interest in the headset. Over the weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that customers aren't as curious about the Vision Pro, with demand for demos in retail stores "way down." At some locations, demos and sales have dropped from a "couple of units a day to just a handful in a whole week."
Vision Pro headset owners have also reported a decrease in usage, picking it up just once or twice a week rather than on a daily basis.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said on Tuesday that Apple is dropping the number of Apple Vision Pro units that it plans to ship, and he said it is a sign that demand in the U.S. has "fallen sharply beyond expectations."
Kuo believes that Apple needs to address the lack of key applications, price, and comfort without impacting user experience in order for the Vision Pro to ultimately see success in the future.Related Roundup: Apple Vision ProBuyer's Guide: Vision Pro (Buy Now)Related Forum: Apple Vision ProThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple said to have restarted discussion for OpenAI integration into iOS 18 A report suggests that Apple is still looking across the spectrum of AI providers for iOS 18, with OpenAi again in conversations with the iPhone maker. There's not a lot to Friday's report from Bloomberg that hasn't already been discussed. The key point from it, is that discussions have started again, or are perhaps continuing with OpenAI for potential inclusion in iOS 18, somehow.Previous rumors made it clear that Apple had discussions with OpenAI. Friday's report says that the technology could make it to iOS 18 in the form of a chatbot. Whether this is to supplement or replace Siri, isn't clear. If the report is accurate, OpenAI is not the only generative tech that Apple is considering integrating. Rumors suggest Apple is in talks with Google to provide iOS 18 users access to Gemini, somehow. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
It’s okay to admit that you’re wrong sometimes, Apple Apple has trouble admitting when it’s wrong. The company’s marketing has always been about excellence, and admitting that something isn’t right seems to be out of the question for Apple. For us customers, this means having to deal with problematic products for longer than we’d like. Yes, I’m talking about – but Apple has had other FineWovens in its past, and it should’ve learned that it’s okay to admit you’re wrong sometimes.

Apple Reignites Talks With OpenAI About Generative AI for iOS 18 Apple is once again talking with OpenAI about using OpenAI technology to power artificial intelligence features in iOS 18, reports Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Apple held talks with OpenAI earlier in the year, but nothing had come of the discussion. Apple and OpenAI are now said to be speaking about the terms of a possible agreement and how Apple might utilize OpenAI features.
Along with OpenAI, Apple is still having discussions with Google about licensing Google's Gemini AI. Apple has not come to a final decision, and Gurman suggests that the company could partner with both Google and OpenAI or pick another provider entirely.
Rumors suggest that iOS 18 will have a major focus on AI, with Apple set to introduce AI functionality across the operating system. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed in February that Apple plans to "break new ground" in AI.
We'll get a first look at the AI features that Apple has planned in just over a month, with iOS 18 set to debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference that kicks off on June 10.Related Roundup: iOS 18Tag: Apple GPTThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple has reportedly resumed negotiations with OpenAI to power AI features in iOS 18 Some reports last month revealed that Apple was in talks with Google to use Gemini to power new AI features coming to iOS 18. Earlier this year, 9to5Mac also reported that Apple had been running internal tests with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Now a Bloomberg report claims that Apple has resumed negotiations with OpenAI for a potential partnership.

Preparing for the Unthinkable: A Brief Guide to Digital Legacy Planning Losing Charles Edge recently caused Adam Engst to think morbid thoughts that turned into advice about how planning for the unexpected can make life a little easier for those left behind.
Apple Event Next Month Said to Be 'Accompanied By an Event in London' Apple's upcoming "Let Loose" event "will be accompanied by an event in London," according to The Independent's Andrew Griffin.
The report does not provide any additional details about what will be happening in London, but it might simply be a briefing that allows journalists in the UK to receive hands-on time with the new iPads and other products that Apple is expected to announce next month. Apple has frequently invited the media to hands-on briefings in New York City, and it also held a briefing in Toronto, Canada for the new MacBook Air models last month.
Apple's "Let Loose" event begins on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, which will be 3 p.m. local time in London. New devices and accessories expected to be announced at the event include two new iPad Pro models, two new iPad Air models, an updated Apple Pencil, and a redesigned Magic Keyboard for iPads, and there is always a chance of a surprise or two. A video stream of the event will be available on Apple.com and on YouTube.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has repeatedly said that he expects Apple to launch its Vision Pro headset in additional countries before its developers conference WWDC, which begins June 10. Could the accompanying "event" in London allow journalists in the UK to receive hands-on time with the Vision Pro too? It could make sense for Apple to launch the Vision Pro internationally before it announces visionOS 2 at WWDC.
Of course, this is all just some pre-event speculation for fun based on a single sentence in a British newspaper. Apple's actual plans remain to be seen.Tag: May 2024 Apple EventThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Hands-On With the Rabbit r1 Pocket AI Assistant With the rise of ChatGPT and large language models (LLMs), AI-dedicated devices have started coming out. The Humane AI pin was widely lambasted earlier this month when it launched, and now the Rabbit r1 AI assistant is out. With rumors that Apple is delving into AI in a big way, we thought we'd check out the Rabbit r1 to see what it can do and how it measures up to an iPhone.
Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.
Priced at $200, the Rabbit is a square-shaped pocket assistant that can answer questions, look up information, interface with food delivery and ride sharing services, play music, translate languages, and more. It's a cute little device that looks right at home with the Playdate from Panic, but most of what it can do can already be done with an iPhone.
Unlike the Humane AI Pin, the Rabbit r1 has a screen that you can interact with, which makes it much more functional. It comes with an old school scroll wheel for navigating the UI, and there's a built-in camera for recognizing objects. It is Wi-Fi only by default, but you can add a SIM card, which is an added cost.
As a first-generation device, the r1 isn't perfect. The setup process is bare bones without tips on how to use the device or what it's able to do. You'll almost certainly need to visit the website to figure out how to use it if you pick one of these up, so it could do with some on-device instruction to make using it smoother. There are, for example, hidden controls like shaking the device to get to the settings, and the settings are the only way to activate the terminal for typing.
The idea with the Rabbit r1 is to be less reliant on a smartphone, so there's no app for it. That's kind of a hassle if you want to get to the photos and other information that you've stored on it, because it's only accessible through the Rabbit Hole website.
You can hook up services like Spotify, but it's not super smart about suggesting songs. Asking it to play liked songs, for example, resulted in random song selections. The option to translate works well, but it can be slow, and it's tough to get to.
In some tests, ordering food was successful, but not without hiccups. We didn't test placing an order ourselves, but YouTuber Quinn Nelson did and the AI placed the order but didn't ask for guidance on a tip and ended up being overly generous and tipping the highest suggested amount.
The Rabbit r1 can summarize documents, a task that it's decent at, but that's not really something that a smartphone can't do. It is good at recognizing what's around through the camera, but some things, like a classic Mac, did trip it up.
We need to spend more time testing the Rabbit r1, but so far, it seems like a neat device but also an unnecessary one that isn't quite ready to replace a smartphone. Have an opinion on the r1? Let us know in the comments below.Tag: Artificial IntelligenceThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

How to charge an iPhone properly Macworld
iPhones are remarkable devices, but they lose their lustre once the battery runs dry. That’s why it’s important to look after the cell inside and ensure that you always charge it properly.
In this article we explain the steps you need to take if you want your iPhone to last till the late hours each day and keep doing so for as many years as possible.
How to charge an iPhone with a cable
The fastest way to charge an iPhone is using a cable. Until the iPhone 15, this meant using a USB to Lightning cable. From the iPhone 15 on, you need a USB-C to USB-C cable.
But it’s not quite as easy as that. For the fastest charge, that Lightning cable needs to connect to a USB-C charger so you need a USB-C to Lightning cable and not an old USB-A to Lightning cable.
While Apple states that a 20W charger can fast-charge an iPhone, newer iPhone models will charge faster if you use a 30W or faster charger.
Read about the best Lightning cables and the best USB-C to USB-C cables for iPhone.
How to wirelessly charge an iPhone
From the iPhone 8 on, you can charge wirelessly. From iPhone 8 to iPhone 11, this used the Qi wireless charging standard. From iPhone 12, you can use Qi chargers or faster MagSafe chargers that clamp to your iPhone using a ring of hidden magnets for a more efficient fit and therefore faster wireless charging.
Qi chargers range in power from 5W to 15W; MagSafe chargers from 7.5 to 15W. Because of the magnetic fit MagSafe chargers will be faster even if at the same wattage as Qi, so got for a MagSafe charger if you can (and your iPhone is version 12 or later). Read our recommendations for the best MagSafe chargers and also the best MagSafe power banks.
The latest Qi2 chargers should match MagSafe on 15W charging speed; see What is Qi2 for more details.
How to charge an iPhone using a power bank
Portable power banks offer the ability to charge an iPhone on the go when you’re not near an outlet or don’t have time to sit for 15 minutes. They range from a few thousand milliamp hours to more than 15,000, which is enough to change an iPhone 15 Pro Max nearly three times. Most power banks need a separate charging cable that connects to the iPhone, though some have built-in cables that are stored somewhere inside the device. Some higher-end power banks have magnetic pads for charging wirelessly as well.
Using a power bank is simple. Make sure you charge it before you head out and then when you want to fill up your iPhone, use it as you would use a regular charger—either with a cable or wirelessly. Most power banks have LED lights to let you know how much charge is remaining.
You can learn more about MagSafe power banks and read our best picks in our roundup.
How to use the iPhone’s Charging Optimization settings
Inside the Battery tab in Settings, Apple has a Charging Optimization option that lets you turn on features to preserve battery wear over time and conserve energy. They are:
Optimized Battery Charging: Your iPhone will learn from your daily charging and usage habits so it can limit charging to 80 percent until you need to use it.
80% Limit: Your iPhone will stop charging at 80 percent most days and only charge to 100 percent to “maintain battery state-of-charge estimates.”
Clean Energy Charging: Your iPhone will attempt to charge when lower carbon-emission electricity is available in your area based on your daily usage habits.
You can turn on any of these options in Settings or opt for None, which will charge to 100% when you plug it in as normal.
How to choose the best iPhone charging accessories
There are two things to consider when shopping for new iPhone charging gear: the charger and the cable. The iPhone comes with an Apple USB-C cable that supports charging of up to 60 watts, more than enough to fast-charge any iPhone, but only USB 2 speeds (480Mbps) for data transfers. If you’re buying a second or replacement cable for charging, we recommend getting one that supports at least 5Gbps for data transfers.
You’ll also need a power adapter, and we recommend getting one that’s at least 30W for the fastest charging. If you don’t want to carry around multiple adapters, buy one that has two or more ports and can charge two devices at once (60W or higher will be best). Check out our roundup of the best USB-C power adapters for iPhone and MacBook for a good selection for any budget.
FAQ
1.
Can I leave my phone charging overnight
Ever since smartphones arrived, the most common way of recharging them has been to plug them in when you go to bed, then disconnect them in the morning with a full charge to last the day.
This made a lot of sense when batteries took a long time to get up to full charge, as the eight hours in bed gave both the user and device time to recover from the previous day’s exertions.
But now, as the period it takes to charge a battery has dramatically reduced, it’s time to reconsider how you top up the tank.
iPhones use Lithium-ion batteries because, Apple states, they “charge faster, last longer, and have a higher power density for more battery life in a lighter package”. These are all fine features, but one thing that Li-On is not really keen on is being reduced to 0 percent and then back up to 100 percent each day.
Apple recommends, as do many others, that you try to keep an iPhone battery between 30 and 80 percent charged. Topping up to 100 percent isn’t optimal, although it won’t necessarily damage your battery, but letting it regularly run down to 0 percent can prematurely lead to a battery’s demise. There is an exception, as it’s considered good form to do a complete 0-100 percent charge about once a month, just to keep the battery in good shape.
For all other instances, though, the best practice is to top your battery up periodically during the day so that it stays in that sweet spot. Hopefully, this should keep the cell healthy for as long as possible. To make this easier to achieve we recommend keeping an extra charger at work or in your car so that you can pop the iPhone on to it when you see the battery beginning to fade.
There’s more on why you shouldn’t charge a phone overnight here.
2.
Can I use any charger to charge my iPhone?
The generala dvice is that you should use the charger that came with your device. If you have an iPad, then the charger that came with it is also compatible and may actually get your iPhone up to a full tank quicker than its own charger.
But there are faster, smaller and cheaper chargers that beat Apple’s own. There are various third-party charger offerings on the Apple store itself, but, just for you, we have tested the best iPhone chargers to make your choices much easier.
Charging an iPhone via a cable is the speediest way to get back up to full power but wireless charging is often more convenient. From the iPhone 12 on, Apple has added a magnetic technology called MagSafe that makes wireless charging more efficient and therefore faster.
Avoid cheap knock-off products, as in some cases these have been known to damage devices. See our Are cheap iPhone chargers safe? feature for more details.
3.
Does fast charging damage an iPhone?
No. So long as your iPhone has the Fast Charge capabilities (from the iPhone 8 and later) then the battery and iOS work together to ensure that it won’t overheat or cause any harm.
If you have a thick protective case on your iPhone, it might be a good idea to remove it while using a fast-charger, just so the heat dissipates easily and doesn’t trigger the software warnings to slow down the power flow.
Learn the fastest ways to charge an iPhone.
4.
Is it safe to store a charged iPhone?
Should you find you are travelling without your device or need to leave it unused for multiple weeks or months, you’ll want to ensure that it’s charged to around 50 percent before turning it off.
This will protect the battery cell from dying while left idle. The battery will still lose charge at a slow but steady rate, so after six months it will need charging back up to 50% once more.
For more ways to get the best energy performance from your iPhone see our How to improve iPhone battery life guide, or if you’re worried that the cell might be experiencing problems then read How to check iPhone battery health.

This setup is primarily powered by a 14-inch MacBook Pro connected to a single Thunderbolt cable. It’s also made possible by a whole host of software, including MovieRecorder, a pricey but fantastic application from Softron. MovieRecorder allows me to simultaneously record high-quality HEVC-encoded video in a multi-cam setup from multiple cameras directly to my computer, bypassing SD Cards of CFexpress cards entirely.

Reminder: Privacy requirement for app submissions starts May 1 The App Store was created to be a safe place for users to discover and get millions of apps all around the world. Over the years, we‘ve built many critical privacy and security features that help protect users and give them transparency and control — from Privacy Nutrition Labels to app tracking transparency, and so many more.An essential requirement of maintaining user trust is that developers are responsible for all of the code in their apps, including code frameworks and libraries from other sources. That‘s why we’ve created privacy manifests and signature requirements for the most popular third-party SDKs, as well as required reasons for covered APIs.Starting May 1, 2024, new or updated apps that have a newly added third-party SDK that‘s on the list of commonly used third-party SDKs will need all of the following to be submitted in App Store Connect:
Required reasons for each listed API
Privacy manifests
Valid signatures when the SDK is added as a binary dependency
Apps won’t be accepted if they fail to meet the manifest and signature requirements. Apps also won’t be accepted if all of the following apply:
They’re missing a reason for a listed API
The code is part of a dynamic framework embedded via the Embed Frameworks build phase
The framework is a newly added third-party SDK that’s on the list of commonly used third-party SDKs
In the future, these required reason requirements will expand to include the entire app binary. If you’re not using an API for an approved reason, please find an alternative. These changes are designed to help you better understand how third-party SDKs use data, secure software dependencies, and provide additional privacy protection for users. This is a step forward for all apps and we encourage all SDKs to adopt this functionality to better support the apps that depend on them.

The 13-inch MacBook Air has the same thin and light design as the M2 model with a new M3 processor and the ability to run two external displays. It’s got a gorgeous Liquid Retina display with super-skinny bezels (and a notch) along with 18 hours of battery life, a fantastic keyboard, fast charging with MagSafe, and two Thunderbolt ports.
In our 4.5-star review, we praised the M3 MacBook Air performance boost and called it “a great laptop, especially for users who prioritize mobility” that “can handle whatever task you need to do. And at this price it’s a fantastic bargain too.

MacRumors Giveaway: Win an iPhone 15 and Blue Light Screen Protector From Ocushield For this week's giveaway, we've teamed up with Ocushield to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win an iPhone 15 and one of Ocushield's Blue Light Screen Protectors to go along with it.
Ocushield has a range of medically rated screen protectors that are designed for for the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Ocushield specializes in blue light reduction, so all of its screen protectors cut down on the amount of blue light that you're exposed to when using your devices.
Blue light can cause eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, fatigue, and blurry vision in some people, and it is hard to avoid between work on the computer and day-to-day iPhone and iPad usage. Blue light can also impact sleep because it affects the production of melatonin and your body doesn't naturally produce enough to tell you when to go to sleep.
Ocushield's iPhone Screen Protector comes in sizes that fit all devices dating back to the iPhone 5. It comes with a kit for cleaning the iPhone and an applicator tray for alignment purposes, both of which make for a no-flaw application process.
The iPad Screen Protector features a similar kit, and it is available for the iPad, iPad mini, iPad Pro, and iPad Air. Each one comes with a screen cleaner, tray for application, sticker to remove dust, and a cleaning cloth.
The blue light filters block up to 99 percent of UV and blue light emissions between 300-400nm, and up to 54 percent of harmful blue light between 400 to 470nm. Ocushield says that its iPhone and iPad screen protectors are meant to preserve the natural colors of the device for a clear picture.
The iPhone and iPad Screen Protectors are both made of thin, tempered glass, which also offer screen protection. They come with an anti-bacterial coating, oil resistance, and an anti-reflection coating that cuts down on fingerprints. Ocushield says that the screen protectors are able to prevent eye strain, improve sleep, and protect the eyes and skin from harmful blue light.
While the iPhone and iPad Screen Protectors are permanent and attach with no-damage adhesive, Ocushield's MacBook Anti-Blue Light Filter works a little differently. Apple does not recommend closing a MacBook with a screen protector attached, so the Blue Light Filter for Mac is removable.
It adheres using silicone or magnets depending on your Mac model, and it can be put on when you're using your Mac and then taken off when you need to close the display. It offers the same blue light protection as the iPhone and iPad Screen Protectors, but it also has a built-in privacy filter. When attached, the display of a Mac viewed from the side is near black, preserving privacy. It also has an anti-bacterial coating and an anti-glare coating that cut down on glare and reflections.
Ocushield recently acquired EyeJust, a company that creates blue light blocking glasses, so it is expanding its product lineup with stylish glasses that will work for all devices, and improving its presence in the United States (it is based in the UK).
It is worth noting that Apple has added built-in blue light reduction features to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Night Shift, but the functionality only works at night. It also has a greater impact on color accuracy because it uses display color temperature for blocking blue light. Ocushield also has a wider feature set, including anti-drop protection for the iPhone and side-angle viewing restrictions on the Mac, plus glare reduction across all devices. To celebrate spring, Ocushield has a 15 percent discount on all products right now with the promo code BLOOM2024.
We have an iPhone 15 and Ocushield Screen Protector for a MacRumors reader. To enter to win, use the widget below and enter an email address. Here’s how that iPhone survived a 16,000-foot drop from the Alaska Airlines plane Back in January, a fully intact iPhone was discovered along the side of the road after plummeting 16,000 feet when a door blew off an Alaska Airlines flight. At the time, we pointed out that it was pretty incredible the iPhone 14 Pro Max survived such a dramatic fall.

iOS Dev Weekly – Issue 658 – Apr 26th 2024 Comment
Visiting WWDC is always a special experience, but attending is harder than with many other conferences. You have to win the ticket lottery due to the demand, almost everyone will need a flight of some duration, and let’s not even talk about the hotel prices! 😱
That’s a challenge even if you have a company willing to fund you, but it must feel completely out of reach for almost all students, which is why I love that Apple organises the Swift Student Challenge every year. Apple announced the winners this week, and from the 350 winners, Apple picked 50 to attend a three-day event around this year’s conference. 🎉
I got a chance to talk with a couple of the winners this week: AJ Nettles and Dezmond Blair. In previous years, the students have organised to keep track of everyone’s submissions, and I always loved browsing and linking to those repositories each year. There is no 2024 repository, unfortunately, but getting to meet AJ and Dezmond was a treat.
Their apps are impressive, too, with AJ creating a password manager using CryptoKit and Dezmond making a mountain biking companion app using ARKit.
Congratulations to all the winners this year, and I hope those who are attending the conference will make them feel welcome and part of the community.
I’ll finish with some words from AJ, who had this to say when I asked if he had any advice for next year’s students:
“Don’t be afraid to fail. If your code doesn’t compile then try again with a different approach. It will error. It will have bugs. But if you keep trying to improve it, you’ll get there.”
That’s good advice for everyone, not just next year’s students! 👍

Developer activities
It’s becoming clear that these virtual one-to-one sessions with Apple or “developer activities” are a permanent fixture of what the developer programme offers. Some sessions are specific, covering topics like optimising in-app subscriptions, and some are super broad like a “one-on-one technology consultation” to receive “advice on your app or game”. I’d be fascinated to hear from anyone who has taken advantage of these general technology consultations. Just reply to this email if that’s you!

Apple CEO Tim Cook has also alluded to the Apple Pencil in relation to the event and a series of promotional Apple logos appear to hint at upcoming illustration capabilities. Apple has not released any new iPads since October 2022, so this event has been a long time coming.
Apple is expected to announce new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, along with updated Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories. Here is everything that has been rumored:Two new iPad Pro models with the M3 chip, OLED displays, a thinner enclosure, slimmer bezels, a matte screen option, a landscape-oriented front camera, other design changes, and possibly MagSafe wireless charging.

A new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro with an aluminum top case, larger trackpad, and other "laptop-like" design improvements.
A new Apple Pencil, which may have a new "squeeze" gesture for certain actions and eventual support for visionOS.
Apple's upcoming special event will take place on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 a.m. Pacific Time (10 a.m. Eastern Time), with a live stream to be available on Apple.com and on YouTube as usual. The event invitation does not mention an in-person component, with Apple inviting the media to watch online alongside the general public. It will take place just over a month before Apple's annual developers conference WWDC, which runs from June 10 through June 14.

AirPods 4 Rumors: Everything We Know So Far Apple introduced the third-generation AirPods nearly three years ago and an all new model is now slated to launch later this year with a range of improvements and new features.
Many of the changes and improvements introduced with the third-generation AirPods originated on the first-generation AirPods Pro. As such, it seems likely that many of the upgrades coming to the fourth-generation AirPods will be shaped by the second-generation AirPods Pro. Our best indications so far about what to expect come from a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Two Models
Apple is rumored to be working on two versions of the fourth-generation AirPods targeting different price points. The company is apparently aiming to replace both the third-generation AirPods and the lower-priced second-generation AirPods that it continues to sell. Currently, there is little difference between the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 beyond their designs.
The higher-end version of the AirPods will purportedly feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and a speaker in the charging case that can play a sound for easy location, which both have to date been limited to the AirPods Pro.
Design Changes
The next-generation AirPods are rumored to feature an updated design, looking like a cross between the current AirPods and the AirPods Pro, with slightly shorter stems. Fit is expected to be improved, but it is as of yet unclear if Apple will add silicone ear tips.
H2 Chip
One of the key aspects the next-generation AirPods are likely to bring over from the second-generation AirPods Pro is the H2 chip. Both the second- and third-generation AirPods currently feature the H1 chip.
Apple says the H2 chip provides an "exceptional acoustic experience" when paired with a new low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier in the AirPods Pro. The AirPods Pro offer richer bass and clearer sound across a wider range of frequencies partly due to the computational audio improvements facilitated by the H2 chip, so similar enhancements seem highly likely to come to the fourth-generation AirPods.
There could also be improvements to Personalized Spatial Audio, faster pairing and device switching, and persistent battery information thanks to the H2 chip.
Bluetooth 5.3
In the AirPods Pro, the H2 chip is accompanied by Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. Many of Apple's products now feature Bluetooth 5.3, so the fourth-generation AirPods are highly likely to receive this upgrade. Bluetooth 5.3 offers faster and more reliable connectivity with Bluetooth accessories, as well as improved power efficiency, which can contribute to longer battery life.
Longer Battery Life
The H2 chip is more power efficient than the H1 chip in the second- and third-generation AirPods. In the AirPods Pro, the H2 chip and Bluetooth 5.3 provide an additional hour and a half of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation enabled compared to the previous generation. Applied to the standard AirPods, this could translate to a battery life increase from five hours to around six and a half hours.
Volume Controls
It is also possible that the AirPods could gain touch-based volume controls like the AirPods Pro. To turn the volume up or down, users simply place their thumb on the stem of either AirPod and use their index finger to swipe up or down on the small touch control area.
That being said, Apple could regard on-device volume controls as a high-end feature reserved for the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, meaning that the fourth-generation AirPods could still miss out on this feature.
Find My Improvements
The MagSafe Charging Case is also likely to get several improvements to integrate more deeply with Find My. The second-generation AirPods Pro introduced two key features in this area: The U1 chip for Precision Tracking and a built-in speaker.
Currently, your iPhone or iPad can help guide you to their location in the Find My app, but this is a limited experience on the current model, simply indicating whether or not they are nearby. The U1 chip would allow your iPhone to show an arrow pointing in the specific direction of your AirPods, an approximate distance telling you how far away they are, and even a message saying if they are located on a different floor.
Similarly, you can currently play a sound on your AirPods to help you find them, but this is played through the earbuds. If the earbuds are inside the charging case, it is likely the sound will be quite muffled. With the latest AirPods Pro, Apple added a speaker to the charging case itself, allowing users to more clearly hear a location alert from their AirPods, and even locate the case when it is separate from the earbuds. An identical speaker is expected come to the high-end version of the standard AirPods in their next iteration.
It is also worth noting that the lanyard loop on the AirPods Pro doubles as an antenna for the U1 chip, so this small feature could also be coming to the next-generation AirPods if they do offer Precision Tracking.
Apple Watch Charger Compatibility
The third-generation AirPods can charge via MagSafe, a Qi wireless charger, or a Lightning cable. With its latest AirPods Pro model, Apple added the ability to use an Apple Watch charger as an additional charging method.
Apple does not seem to regard charging technologies as "Pro"-exclusive features, so, as a basic utility, it seems likely that this added charging method will come to the fourth-generation AirPods to provide even more versatility.
Hearing Aid Functionality
In a software update coming later next year, Apple will apparently add hearing aid functionality, allowing AirPods to serve as an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing alternative to traditional hearing aids. The FDA in 2022 approved OTC hearing aid options, paving the way for Apple to market the AirPods for hearing loss. Apple also allegedly plans to offer hearing tests that would tell AirPods users if they are experiencing hearing loss.
USB-C Port
Like the most recent iPhone models and the USB-C AirPods Pro, the fourth-generation AirPods are expected to include a USB-C port for charging.
Release Date
Rumors suggest that the fourth-generation AirPods will launch in September or October 2024.Related Roundup: AirPods 3Buyer's Guide: AirPods (Don't Buy)Related Forum: AirPodsThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Share a Webpage Link With Quoted Text in iPhone Messages Most iPhone users know how to share a webpage link in Messages, but not everyone realizes that you can quote text from the webpage and include it in the message link. Keep reading to learn more.
Incorporating quoted text when sharing a webpage link in Messages is a great way to get to the point and make it clear why the content you're sharing is relevant and interesting. It not only makes the link more engaging but also personalizes the message if it's sent in the midst of a conversation.
By highlighting specific text, you can streamline your communication by directing the recipient's attention to the most pertinent information on the linked website. It saves time, and ensures that the key piece of information you want to share isn't missed. It can also serve as a conversation starter. Here's how it works.
In Safari, navigate to the webpage containing the relevant information you want to share.
Select the text that you want to quote in your shared link by pressing and holding on the words, using the selection anchors to more precisely include the text you want.
Choose Copy from the pop-up menu.
Tap the Share button at the bottom of Safari's interface, then tap the Messages icon in the share sheet, or choose a contact to message in the suggested list above.
In the Messages app, add a comment for more context if desired, then tap the send button.
That's all there is to it. By using this method of sharing links, it can even serve as a memory aid in ongoing conversations, which can help both you and your recipient recall the relevance of its content to previous discussions. Try it! Tag: MessagesThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Removes Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps From App Store 404 Media: Apple has removed a number of AI image generation apps from the App Store after 404 Media found these apps advertised the ability to create nonconsensual nude images, a sign that app store operators are starting to take more action against these types of apps.
Overall, Apple removed three apps from the App Store, but only after we provided the company with links to the specific apps and their related ads, indicating the company was not able to find the apps that violated its policy itself.
Apple's action comes after we reported on Monday that Instagram advertises nonconsensual AI nude apps. By browsing Meta's Ad Library, which archives ads on its platform, when they ran, on what platforms, and who paid for them, we were able to find ads for five different apps, each with dozens of ads. Two of the ads were for web-based services, and three were for apps on the Apple App Store. Meta deleted the ads when we flagged them. Apple did not initially respond to a request for comment on that story, but reached out to me after it was published asking for more information. On Tuesday, Apple told us it removed the three apps on its App Store.

Apple's Regular Mac Base RAM Boosts Ended When Tim Cook Took Over Apple used to regularly increase the base memory of its Macs up until 2011, the same year Tim Cook was appointed CEO, charts posted on Mastodon by David Schaub show.
Earlier this year, Schaub generated two charts: One showing the base memory capacities of Apple's all-in-one Macs from 1984 onwards, and a second depicting Apple's consumer laptop base RAM from 1999 onwards. Both charts were recently resurfaced by the Accidental Tech Podcast.
The graphs show that Apple tended to increase the base memory every two years or so, but that this trend ended when Cook took over the company from Steve Jobs. Memory increased quickly until the Mac Plus was launched in 1986, notes Schaub. "1986 to 1990 were all about decreasing the entry Mac price," he says. "Then we get a pretty straight logarithmic line until Tim Cook became CEO and there has only been a single increase since."
The correlation is interesting, but other variables such as market trends and changes in technology can help to account for the plateau in Cook's era. For example, Stuart McHattie notes that early all-in-one Macs saw a tenfold increase every six years. If that trend had continued from 2006 onwards when the base was 500MB, modern base model Macs would have reached 500GB. Yet today's consumer PC demand for RAM remains around 8GB to 64GB, and very rarely exceeds double digits.
Computers have also changed a lot over the last several years. RAM has gotten faster. Hard disk drives have been superseded by solid-state storage. Chips and components are more tightly integrated. Apple no longer relies on Intel processors to power its machines, and instead uses high performance system-on-a-chip (SOC) architecture, which fuses CPUs, GPUs, and unified memory into a single package. This is why the company feels confident in arguing that 8GB on a Mac is comparable to 16GB on rival systems.
But that does not change the fact that Apple has offered iMac and MacBook Pro models with 8GB of RAM since 2012. Likewise, the MacBook Air has had the same base memory configuration since 2017. In addition, Apple's adoption of unified memory means that Macs cannot have their RAM upgraded after purchase, while Apple continues to pursue a strategy of vastly overcharging customers for higher memory configurations. Users often pay out $200 or more at checkout just to future proof their machines.
Is 8GB of RAM Enough for a Mac in 2024?
Apple's Mac memory configuration strategy is likely to become even more contentious if all upcoming iPhone 16 models turn out to include 8GB of RAM. (In the iPhone 15 series, only the Pro models have 8GB, whereas standard models have 6GB.) Why Apple is prepared to increase RAM in a smartphone but not in a multitasking Mac without users paying excessively for the privilege will be the overriding question on many consumers' lips. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

How to delete photos from iPhone but not from iCloud Macworld
If you are running out of space on your iPhone you may be looking at the huge amount of space being attributed to Photos and thinking that deleting all the photos from your iPhone would be an easy way to increase your storage.
You may have heard of iCloud Photos and wondered if that would be a way to back up your photos so you can delete them from the iPhone. Or you may already be using iCloud Photos and think they are all backed up in iCloud and can be deleted from your iPhone. But you’d be very wrong!
iCloud can be a little confusing: it’s not a backup it’s more of a sync. So rather than being a way to free up space on your iPhone, it’s more of a way to make everything available on all your devices. That’s not to say you can’t use iCloud to make more space on your iPhone, you can, but probably not in the way you think.
So, in this article, we will explain how you can reduce the amount of space photos take up on your iPhone using iCloud and how you can delete photos from your iPhone and not iCloud.
Find out how to save space on your device without accidentally trashing your digital memories.
We look at the following elsewhere:
How to delete photos from iCloud
How to delete photos from an iPhone
How to backup iPhone photos
If I delete photos from my iPhone are they deleted from iCloud?
iCloud Photos is a sync. It allows you to see all your images on all your Apple devices (and at the iCloud.com website). If you delete a photo on your iPhone it will be removed from the iCloud sync. However, you do have a period of 30 days to recover it from the Recently Items folder.
To find the Deleted Items folder in Photos on you iPhone follow these steps:
Tap on the Albums tab in the Photos app.
Swipe down to the Utilities section and find Recently Deleted.
Unlock the folder.
Find the photo select it. (If you want to recover more than one image tap on Select and tap on all the images you wish to restore.)
If you have selected just one image that photo will open on your screen. Tap on Recover.
If you select more than one image tap on the three dots at the bottom right of the screen and choose Recover.
How to use iCloud Photos to save space on your iPhone
This doesn’t mean that iCloud can’t help you save space on your iPhone.
If you use iCloud Photos and choose Optimise iPhone Storage you can reduce the amount of space taken by the photos stored on your iPhone. Also read: How to move photos to iCloud to save space on an iPhone.
Apple explains: “If your iPhone is low on space, full-resolution photos and videos are automatically replaced with smaller, device-sized versions.” This should significantly reduce the amount of space being taken up by your photos.
The only limit is the amount of space you have available in iCloud. We run through the iCloud storage plans and the other features of iCloud separately, but essentially Apple offers the following:
5GB free (this won’t be enough for all your photos)
50GB 99c/99p
200GB $2.99/£2.99
2TB $9.99/£8.99
6TB $29.99/£26.99
12TB $59.99/£54.99
If you take a lot of photos you might need to consider 2TB or more, but you will be able to share the space with members of your family if you turn on Family Sharing.
How to turn on iCloud Photos
To use iCloud Photos follow these steps:
Open Settings on your iPhone.
Tap on the Apple ID section at the top of the screen.
Tap on iCloud.
Tap on Photos.
Switch the slider beside Sync this iPhone on.
How to optimize iPhone storage with iCloud Photos.
As we explained above if you want to reduce the amount of space being taken up by photos on your iPhone you need to turn on Optimize iPhone Storage.
Once you have iCloud Photos turned on you can choose for high-res versions of your images and videos to be saved in iCloud, but only small versions on your iPhone.
Go to Settings and tap on your Apple ID.
Tap on iCloud.
Tap on Photos.
Now make sure that Optimise iPhone Storage is selected rather than Download and Keep Originals.
Once you have turned on iCloud Photos and Optimise iPhone Storage there should be no need to delete photos from your iPhone.
What happens if I turn off iCloud photo sharing?
If you go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Photos you will see that it is possible to stop syncing your iPhone by switching the slider beside Sync this iPhone to off.
If you do this, and have Optimize iPhone Storage on, you will see the option to remove photos from your iPhone or download the photos and videos to your iPhone.
Assuming you don’t have space on your iPhone to download everything, you might consider the Remove from iPhone option. At this point, you are likely wondering: “If I choose the Remove from iPhone option will all my photos be deleted from iCloud?”
If you never connect that iPhone to iCloud again your photos will remain in iCloud. But, crucially, if you later decide to connect that iPhone to iCloud using the same Apple ID to do so, the iCloud sync will result in all your photos being removed from iCloud to match your iPhone.
How to backup photos so you can delete them from iPhone
If you want to remove the photos from your iPhone and still have them backed up there are some ways to do this.
We cover various ways to back up photos on iPhone in another article, but here are a few options to consider.
Option 1: Use Google Photos
One option is to use Google Photos to back up your iPhone photos. We run through how to do this in another article, but the steps are as follows:
Download the Google Photos app on your iPhone.
Allow Google Photos to access your iPhone.
Choose the option to Back Up and Sync.
Google offers free unlimited photo and video storage, but the files will be compressed. Luckily for typical users this shouldn’t affect image quality.
If you choose to maintain the original image quality you will need to pay for storage.
With Google Photos up and running all the photos you take on the iPhone will be backed up. This should mean that if you delete photos from your iPhone they will remain in Google Photos.
Option 2: Back up to a Mac
You could save all the images synced in iCloud Photos to your Mac. Assuming you have enough space on your Mac this may be an option.
Open Photos on your Mac.
Click on Photos in the menu bar.
Choose Settings.
Click on iCloud.
Choose Download Originals to this Mac.
With this option selected high res versions of all the images in iCloud will be downloaded to the Mac. Expect it to take some time!
Note that unless you turn off iCloud Photos your entire library will still be synced via iCloud, so if you delete something from your Mac it will be removed from iCloud.
There are other ways to import your photos from your iPhone to your Mac.
You can import images directly to Photos on a Mac. To do this:
Plug your iPhone into your Mac.
Open Photos.
Click on your iPhone in Devices.
Wait while your Mac prepares to import from your iPhone.
Once you can see previews of the Photos on your iPhone you can choose which ones you want to import.
Click on Import.
You can also use Image Capture to import photos to a folder on your Mac.
Both of these options will take a long time if you have a lot of photos stored on your iPhone.
Once you have backed up your photos from your iPhone to your Mac you might want to consider backing up your Mac, or moving your Photos library to an external drive. We also have group tests of the best SSDs and best External hard drives.

TSMC’s shrinking silicon roadmap could mean big things for your Apple devices Macworld
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) just held its 2024 North America Technology Symposium, where it filled in attendees and investors on its technology roadmap for the future.
You may rightly ask: okay but what does this have to do with me, a user of Apple products? Well, TSMC is a chip fabrication company, and likely the most advanced one in the world. They’ve been Apple’s partner for nearly all of its chips major chips—the A series for iPhones and iPads, the M series for Macs, and more. And Apple is often first in line for new manufacturing processes from TSMC, paying a premium to be the first customer to get to use 5nm or 3nm technologies, for example.
Here’s a summary of the TSMC roadmap and what it might mean for future Apple silicon, and therefore future iPhones, iPads, Macs, and more.
What’s a nanometer?
Before we talk about TSMC’s future technologies, let’s have a quick reminder on what a “nanometer” is in this context. Technically, it’s one billionth of a meter. A human hair is between 50,000 and 100,000nm thick. Most bacteria are between 1,000 and 10,000 nanometers.
In silicon process technology, the “nanometer” measurement is how big some of the features of the chip are. Different companies measure different features–it used to be the length between the source and drain parts of a field-effect transistor (FET), but these days different parts are measured by different companies.
The A17 Pro chip was Apple’s first 3nm processor, followed by the M3.
The A17 Pro chip was Apple’s first 3nm processor, followed by the M3.Apple
The A17 Pro chip was Apple’s first 3nm processor, followed by the M3.Apple
Apple
In other words, 5nm means some specific parts of the chip are only 5 nanometers big, but TSMC’s 5nm is not the same as Intel’s 5nm, is not the same as Samsung’s 5nm, and so on. A smaller nanometer number means you can fit more chip logic or cache or whatever in the same amount of space, which can lead to more powerful chips, lower power consumption, smaller chips that fit into smaller devices, and so on.
Think of it a bit like looking at a city in Apple Maps–zooming out makes everything smaller, putting more buildings, streets, and land on the same amount of screen. That’s what moving to a smaller nanometer process is like more “city” in the same space.
There are many other important aspects of a microprocessor, including the way transistors are insulated, materials used, and so much more, but the “nanometer” measurement has stuck as a way of differentiating one major manufacturing generation from another.
3nm progress
Apple was first with TSMC’s initial 3nm process, which was called N3. The company has now refined that with the N3E process, which is what we think Apple will use in its most advanced products this fall (A18 and M4). While it might seem significant, the main focus of N3E is to make the chips more affordable. There are some slight differences in density and performance but it’s not a major generational change.
TSMC
TSMC
TSMC
2nm coming next year
The next major change is the shift to 2nm, which is expected to happen in 2025. Apple is once again expected to be the first major (and possibly only) customer, so it’s possible that the A19 or other chips (maybe an M5?) that ship in late 2025 will use this process. It all comes down to TSMC’s ability to work out the kinks in manufacturing and yields and such in time to produce tens of millions of chips with it.
Compared to the N3E process, the N2 process is expected to reduce power consumption by 25-30 percent (for a chip of the same complexity and frequency) or to improve performance by 10-15 percent at the same power consumption. Chip density (how much stuff fits into a single area) is expected to increase by 15 percent.
An interesting change to this generation of chips, besides simply being smaller/denser/faster, is something TSMC calls “NanoFlex.” It will allow chip designers to use cells from different chip libraries all on the same wafer. Usually, a chip designer has to use all blocks from a “low power,” “high density,” or “high performance” library, depending on the most important needs of the chip. By letting designs use different parts from different libraries, chips can fine-tune different areas to their needs.
For example, Apple could decide it is most important to make the video and audio encoders and decoders part of the chip as small as possible and lay out that part of the chip using the high-density design libraries while using the energy-efficient libraries for the low-power CPU cores and the high-performance libraries for the performance CPU cores.
For the chips Apple produces, the limiting factor tends to be power and thermal dissipation. So you can probably expect chips made with the N2 process to have more “stuff” in them (cores, cache, bigger and more complex video encoders, etc) to the tune of 15-20 percent, with slightly higher clock speeds and therefore performance, compared to chips from the year before. However, the ability to optimize specific parts of the chip with tools from different chip libraries has the potential to pay off big in terms of higher “peak” performance or lower idle power.
The year after N2 is released, TSMC will have two enhanced versions of the process: N2P which is focused on top performance, and N2X focused on lower voltages and power consumption. It’s unclear whether Apple will adopt one of those for the chips that come in 2026.
A16—we’re doing angstroms now?
The major shift after 2nm (N2) is a process TSMC calls A16 (no relation to the A16 Bionic). It’s a 1.6-nanometer process but now that things are getting so small, they’re sort of getting off “nanometers” and switching to “angstroms.” An angstrom is a ten-billionth of a meter, or 10 times smaller than a nanometer.
This one is not coming until late 2026, almost certainly too late for Apple to use that year. We’ll see chips made with the A16 process from Apple in 2027, most likely.
TSMC gave some early estimates compared to the coming N2P process, where A16 is expected to improve performance by 8-10 percent at the same voltage and complexity or reduce power by 15-20 percent at the same frequency and transistor count.
The big innovation in the A16 generation will be backside power delivery, something TSMC calls “Super Power Rail.” This runs a network for power distribution on the back side of the silicon wafer, connected to the transistors through little tunnels through it. This improves density and potentially reliability, as power doesn’t have to be routed around with all the signal and clock distribution lines on the top side of the chip. Other chip manufacturers are pursuing similar technologies (Intel’s PowerVia comes to mind)—basically different approaches to the same idea.
TSMC
TSMC
TSMC
TSMC may be a little later than competitors like Intel with this kind of technology, as it has been pushed back a little. It was originally expected to debut in the N2P process, and now will be first introduced in A16 instead.
Chips in Apple products that use the A16 process will be able to have even more stuff (more cores, bigger caches) than the N2 process while maintaining the same power profile.
Having chips with more density or a better power profile earlier than others is one of Apple’s big advantages, but the real magic comes from excellent chip design and software development that optimizes Apple’s software specifically for the chips they produce.

The ridiculously long wait for iPads has reached 18 months Macworld
Earlier this week we got some surprising news out of Cupertino. After weeks of reported delays, Apple announced that it will be holding an event on May 7 with the tagline Let Loose that will presumably feature new iPads. That would make a whopping 559 days since the announcement of the 10th-gen iPad and M2 iPad Pros and even longer since the M1 iPad Air arrived at the Peek Performance event (March 2022).
That’s an extremely long wait for new iPads; the longest ever, in fact. Apple had never gone a full calendar year without launching a new iPad or an update, let alone nearly halfway through the second year. So to say there is tremendous anticipation for the new iPads is an understatement. We’re expecting several new tablets and accessories to appear at the event, including:
Updated iPad Air with a 10.9-inch screen and an M2 processor
New 12.9-inch iPad Air with an M2 processor
Updated 11-inch iPad Pro with an M3 processor and an OLED display
Updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an M3 processor and an OLED display
A new Apple Pencil with a squeeze gesture
A new Magic Keyboard
There may—and likely will—be other surprises, but we’re not expecting the iPad mini or entry-level iPad to get an update at the event.
Based on the invitation and cheeky post from Tim Cook, Apple is going to lean into the iPad’s creative side, with a heavy focus on drawing and painting, the new things the Apple Pencil can do, and the color benefits of the iPad Pro’s new OLED screen. But when the fanfare fades away, the new iPad line could be very similar to the existing one, with higher prices.
It’s possible that Apple delivers a refined design, exciting accessories, and new features that make the updates worth waiting more than 18 months to get. But more likely, they’re just gonna be the same old iPads that we just waited a long time to get.
You can catch up on all of the latest rumors in our iPad Air and iPad Pro roundups ahead of the event.

Apple Sinks From First to Fifth Place in Chinese Smartphone Market Analytics company Canalys has released its latest report on China's smartphone market for the first quarter of 2024, and Apple has come off worst among the top five brands jostling for supremacy in Asia's largest economy.
Huawei returned to the top spot after 13 quarters with a 17% market share. The local vendor shipped 11.7 million smartphones, thanks to its popular Mate and nova series, while OPPO rose to second place on strong performance of its Reno 11 series, shipping 10.9 million units. Conversely, HONOR, vivo, and Apple all slowed their sell-ins in the quarter, ranking third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
HONOR shipped 10.6 million units with a 16% share, a year-on-year increase of 9%, while vivo shipped 10.3 million units with a 15% share, a year-on-year decrease of 9%. Apple declined the most among the top five, sinking to fifth from first place, with 10 million units and a 15% share, which is a year-on-year decrease of 25%.
Huawei's performance is up 70% from a year earlier, when the company was still reorganizing its phone business following U.S. sanctions. Huawei's 5G Mate 60 Pro uses a China-made 7-nanometer processor tailored for the local market, showcasing the kind of advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities that US sanctions were originally designed to prevent.
Huawei has since released its new Pure line of flagship smartphones, and has been busy developing its own operating system, HarmonyOS, since it could not use Google's Android and Google Mobile Services. The continued expansion of the HarmonyOS ecosystem breaks the two-horse race of Android and iOS in Mainland China.
The latest data is unlikely to make for pleasant reading for Apple's CEO Tim Cook, following his trip to China for the inauguration of a major new store in Shanghai. During his visit, coming on the back of a strong Chinese fourth quarter, Cook announced the expansion of Apple's R&D center in the city, highlighting China's crucial role in the company's strategy. Cook also attended the China Development Forum in Beijing, where he said the country was "critical" to Apple.
Apple is deepening its ties with China despite expanding production in Southeast Asia and India. Approximately 17% of Apple's net sales from October to December were derived from the greater China region, making it the largest regional supplier in the company's supply chain. But Apple is facing an uphill battle to reverse falling iPhone sales there, with a 24% year-on-year decline in 2023 projected to deepen through 2024. Apple Thunderbolt Display requires native Thunderbolt, not just USB-C Macworld
Apple made its popular Apple Thunderbolt Display from 2011 to 2016–we still get questions about using the display eight years after it was discontinued. Even though the Thunderbolt Display used an older Thunderbolt standard, it remained compatible with Thunderbolt 3 when that newer standard was released, as well as with the even fresher Thunderbolt 4.
The Apple Thunderbolt Display offered a Thunderbolt 2 data connection via a jack that is identical in appearance to Mini DisplayPort. Thunderbolt 3 requires USB-C, a standard that can connect devices and computers using Thunderbolt 3/4, USB 3.1 and later, and USB4. USB-C is a specification for ports, jacks, and cables; Thunderbolt and USB’s numbered standards define what flows over those connections. (There were some tweaky elements of using Mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 2 when Apple transitioned from the former to the latter, but none of that is relevant with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3/4.)
If you want to use a Thunderbolt Display, most people rely on Apple’s Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter, for which Apple still charges a whopping $49. This adapter has a USB-C jack on one end, and you can only get the display to work if it’s plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port on your Mac or an external Thunderbolt dock.
Apple’s Thunderbolt 2 to 3 display has a Thunderbolt 2 port in the main body, which looks identical to Mini DisplayPort, and a USB-C jack on the other end, which only works when plugged into a Thunderbolt 3/4 port.

Plug it into a USB 3.x/USB4 port on an external dock or a USB 3.x/USB4-only port on certain Macs (like the lower-end Mac Studio models’ front two ports) and the display doesn’t function.
The reason is convoluted. The display relies on DisplayPort data coming from the computer to show the screen. However, even though USB 3.x/USB4 support passing through DisplayPort data, the hardware on the Apple Thunderbolt Display can’t interpret that—it only has a chip that can accept Thunderbolt-encoded information, including the method by which DisplayPort is wrapped up for Thunderbolt.
It’s one of the remaining cases where USB-C frustrates an average user with a mix of older and newer gear. The telltale is the lightning bolt symbol on Apple’s adapter: there’s a Thunderbolt lightning bolt on both the input side (for Thunderbolt 2) and output (for Thunderbolt 3/4). The USB logo is entirely different and absent.
