Is Apple TV+ having a quality crisis? When Apple first entered the TV streaming market, it came with a unique approach. It wasn’t focused on creating the most content, famously launching Apple TV+ with only a handful of shows. Similarly, its aspirations never seemed to be growing into the largest streamer. Despite mainstream hits like Ted Lasso, the service is still relatively niche.
All of that was okay, because Apple’s focus was on one thing: quality. Making the best of the best.
Some have called TV+ the new HBO. At one point, I would have agreed. Apple remarkably won a Best Picture Oscar for CODA, a prize Netflix has still never won. Ted Lasso scored back-to-back Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series. Sure, there were stumbles too (Amazing Stories, anyone?), but overall the service’s first few years brought critical acclaim and built a strong reputation,
More recently, however, the service’s focus on quality seems to have lost ground.

Warren Buffett has sold a lot of Apple stock so far in 2024 Famed investor Warren Buffett cut his firm's Apple holdings by 13% in the first quarter of 2023, as analyst consensus was that the iPhone was seeing declining demand.Warren Buffett [Berkshire Hathaway]Buffett is not a long-term investor in Apple — his Berkshire Hathaway firm only started buying Apple stock in 2016 — but it became a particularly significant shareholder. Warren Buffett also taught both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook about the value of a company buying back its own shares, which it did again after its latest earnings report. As first spotted by CNBC, however, Berkshire Hathaway's own Q1 earnings report reveal that it has cut its stake in Apple by 13% over the period. Apple remains Berkshire Hathaway's biggest holding, worth around $135.4 billion. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

Top Stories: Apple Event Preview, iPad Pro With M4 Chip Rumor, New Beats Headphones, and More It's been a long time since the last one, but an Apple event is finally right around the corner! While it's anticipated to be a fairly short pre-recorded affair, we're expecting to see the first updates to the iPad lineup in over a year and half, so make sure to tune in to see what Apple has in store.
Other news and rumors this week included a couple of product introductions from Apple's Beats brand, a roundup of rumors about updates to Apple's stock apps coming in iOS 18, and more changes to Apple's policies in the EU related to the Digital Markets Act, so read on below for all the details!
What to Expect From the May 7 Apple Event
Apple's first event of 2024 kicks off on Tuesday, May 7, at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, and we've put together our usual pre-event guide outlining what we're expecting to see on Tuesday. Several new products are expected to be unveiled, including two new iPad Pro models, two new iPad Air models, an updated Apple Pencil, and a redesigned Magic Keyboard for iPads.
One rumor was particularly surprising this week, as Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said there is a "strong possibility" that the new iPad Pro models will be equipped with Apple's next-generation M4 chip, rather than the M3 chip that debuted in the MacBook Pro and iMac six months ago. Gurman believes the M4 chip will have an upgraded Neural Engine that is able to process artificial intelligence (AI) tasks faster.
In addition, the new Apple Pencil is rumored to feature haptic feedback.
Will the New iPad Pro Really Have the M4 Chip?
Will the next iPad Pro models be equipped with the M4 chip instead of the M3 chip, or will this rumor end up being as wrong as the flat-edged Apple Watch Series 7 from a few years ago?
While it would be unprecedented for an M-series chip to debut in an iPad before a Mac, there is some evidence to suggest that the rumor might be true, so check out our story for more details about this possibility.
Beats Solo Buds Launching in June for Just $79.99
Apple unveiled two new Beats headphone models this week, including the on-ear Beats Solo 4 and the compact Beats Solo Buds.
Launching in June, the Beats Solo Buds are particularly interesting given their competitive $79.99 price point. Key features include ear tips with four size options, up to 18 hours of battery life, a USB-C carrying case, and Find My support on iOS and Android. However, the Solo Buds lack active noise cancellation, and the carrying case does not have a built-in battery.
In other Beats news, LeBron James and Daniel Ricciardo have been seen in public carrying an unreleased speaker very clearly descended from the discontinued Beats Pill family, so it looks like the popular portable speaker may be making a comeback in the not too distant future.
iOS 18 Rumored to Add New Features to These 16 Apps on Your iPhone
Apple's annual developers conference WWDC is now under six weeks away, and that means the iOS 18 beta is just around the corner.
iOS 18 is rumored to include major upgrades to many built-in iPhone apps, including Apple Music, Messages, Calculator, Notes, Safari, and others. We recently recapped new features that are expected on a per-app basis, so check out the list for a complete overview.
Apple Confirms iPadOS Will Get Same EU App Changes as iOS This Fall
All of the app-related changes recently introduced on iPhones in the EU will also be available on iPads in the EU starting later this fall, according to Apple.
This news comes after the EU ruled that the iPad is a "gatekeeper" platform. Apple has six months to comply with the Digital Markets Act on the iPad, so alternative app marketplaces, support for web browser engines other than WebKit, and more will likely be available by iPadOS 18.1.

AVAssetExportSession: trackIDs don’t persist I am adding a voiceover track to an existing video, which may include audio tracks. I'm using AVAssetExportSession to render the video to a .mov.
I'd like to keep track of which audio track is the voiceover, so if the user later wants to edit the voiceover, I know which track to update. I thought I would use a unique trackID.
So I call:
let compositionAudioTrack = composition.addMutableTrack(withMediaType: .audio, preferredTrackID: myAudioTrackID)!
where myAudioTrackID is a random Int32 I generated. I have confirmed that the trackID for the returned compositionAudioTrack is indeed = myAudioTrackID.
But when I render the video usign AVAssetExportSession, the trackID is reassigned to some other number.
How can I keep track of which audio track is mine?

Apple Announces Largest-Ever $110 Billion Share Buyback As iPhone Sales Drop Apple reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that topped estimates, despite a 10% drop in iPhone sales. The company also announced that its board had authorized $110 billion in share repurchases, "a 22% increase over last year's $90 billion authorization," notes CNBC. "It's the largest buyback in history, ahead of Apple's previous repurchases." From the report: Apple did not provide formal guidance, but Apple CEO Tim Cook told CNBC's Steve Kovach that overall sales would grow in the "low single digits" during the June quarter. Apple posted $81.8 billion in revenue during the year-ago June quarter and LSEG analysts were looking for a forecast of $83.23 billion. On an earnings call with analysts, Apple finance chief Luca Maestri said the company expected the current quarter will deliver double-digit year-over-year percentage growth in iPad sales. What's more, he said the Services division is forecast to continue growing at about the current high rate it's achieved during the past two quarters.
Apple reported net income of $23.64 billion, or $1.53 per share, down 2% from $24.16 billion, or $1.52 per share, in the year-earlier period. Cook told CNBC that sales in the fiscal second quarter suffered from a difficult comparison to the year-earlier period, when the company realized $5 billion in delayed iPhone 14 sales from Covid-based supply issues. "If you remove that $5 billion from last year's results, we would have grown this quarter on a year-over-year basis," Cook said. "And so that's how we look at it internally from how the company is performing."
Apple said iPhone sales fell nearly 10% to $45.96 billion, suggesting weak demand for the current generation of smartphones, which were released in September. The sales were in line with analyst estimates, and Cook said that without last year's increased sales, iPhone revenue would have been flat. Mac sales were up 4% to $7.45 billion, but they are still below the segment's high-water mark set in 2022. Cook said sales were driven by the company's new MacBook Air models which were released with an upgraded M3 chip in March. Other Products, which is how Apple reports sales of its Apple Watch and AirPods headphones, was down 10% year over year to $7.9 billion.

What to Expect From the May 7 Apple Event Apple is set to hold its first event of the year next Tuesday, and the focus will be on the iPad. The iPad Pro and iPad Air models are set to be updated, and Apple also plans to refresh some of its iPad accessories.
Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.
This guide features details on everything that we're expecting to see at the "Let Loose" event that will take place on May 7.
iPad Pro
The iPad Pro models will be the star of Apple's event, featuring the first larger form factor OLED displays. OLED display technology will bring deeper blacks, better contrast, more vibrant colors, and better power efficiency.
Apple is said to be using the "best OLED panels on the market" with higher brightness, extended battery life, 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates, and a long lifetime for the OLED technology. OLED displays have pixels that can be controlled individually, so high dynamic range content looks more realistic and true-to-life.
The iPad Pro models will be available in 11.1-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, and both models will be thinner with slimmed down bezels. The 11.1-inch iPad Pro is expected to be 5.1mm thick, down from 5.9mm, while the 12.9-inch model will be 5mm thick, down from 6.4mm. The tablets will be roughly the same size as the current models, with small changes to the length and width.
It's not entirely clear which M-series chip the iPad Pro models will use, and there is a possibility that these will be the first devices equipped with the AI-focused next-generation M4 chip. If that doesn't happen, Apple will use the M3 that's in the iMac and MacBook Air. Either way, it'll mark a massive improvement.
Along with slimmed down bezels, the iPad Pro's front-facing camera is expected to be relocated to the side of the device rather than the top, so the camera will be upright when the iPad is in a landscape orientation. That makes more sense for video calls and filming done when the iPad is used with a keyboard.
There have been rumors of possible MagSafe charging support and up to 4TB of storage, and we could also see prices go up. Multiple sources have said that the OLED technology will make the 2024 iPad Pro models more expensive, but just how much more expensive remains to be seen. Rumors have ranged from $160 more to $700 more.
For more on the rumors that we've heard so far about the iPad Pro, we have a dedicated 2024 iPad Pro guide.
iPad Air
The iPad Air will get a refresh alongside the iPad Pro, and for the first time, Apple is splitting the Air lineup and introducing two models. The first iPad Air will be a direct successor to the current version, measuring in at 10.9 inches. The second model will come in at 12.9 inches, similar to the iPad Pro.
Offering the iPad Air in two screen sizes will allow customers who want a large screen at a more affordable price than the iPad Pro to have that option. The 10.9 and 12.9-inch iPad Air models will not have the same OLED screen technology Apple is bringing to the iPad Pro, instead using LCD, and that will keep costs lower.
We are not expecting design changes to the iPad Air, except for the new, larger size. Both models will look like the iPad Air 4, featuring an edge-to-edge display with slim bezels and an aluminum chassis with flat, rounded edges. The iPad Air will be thicker than the iPad Pro, and it will have thicker bezels.
Leaked iPad Air images point to a rear camera with a protruding pill-shaped camera bump that's similar to the design we're expecting to see with the iPhone 16. The front camera could be repositioned so that it will be at the top of the iPad Air when it's in landscape mode, allowing it to be in the right orientation for video calls when it's used with a keyboard. The current version has the camera at the top when it is in portrait mode.
While we won't see notable design updates, Apple may introduce new color options. The existing model comes in a range of pastel shades, so Apple could tweak the color selection.
We have more on what's expected for the iPad Air in our iPad Air guide.
Apple Pencil
The iPad Pro and iPad Air will be accompanied by an updated version of the Apple Pencil, which Apple might call the Apple Pencil 3. It isn't yet clear if there will be design changes, but it is expected to be the first Apple Pencil that supports haptic feedback.
How that haptic feedback will be used remains to be seen, but code in iOS 17.5 suggested there will be a "squeeze" gesture that could do things like activate different tools and settings in apps.
There were rumors of interchangeable magnetic tips at one point, but we don't know if that's actually a feature that's coming or an inaccurate rumor. Deeper integration with the Vision Pro is a possibility, and it could perhaps work with drawing apps that support visionOS. There's also a chance that we could see the Apple Pencil come in both black and white rather than just white.
Magic Keyboard
Apple plans to overhaul the Magic Keyboard, introducing a sturdier frame made from aluminum rather than the polyurethane material used for the current version. While the frame and area around the keyboard will be made from aluminum, the exterior shell will still be made from silicone.
With the aluminum build, an iPad and Magic Keyboard combo will more closely resemble a MacBook, both in terms of looks and functionality. There will be a larger trackpad that is similar to the trackpad on a MacBook, so the keyboard will offer a MacBook-like typing and navigating experience.
Apple is using more premium materials for the new Magic Keyboard, so it could be more expensive. The current model is priced starting at $299 for the 11-inch version. The new Magic Keyboard is likely to work with both the upcoming iPad Air and iPad Pro models as they are similar in size (11.1 and 12.9 inches for the iPad Pro and 10.9 and 12.9 inches for the iPad Air).
Other Accessories
Apple refreshes its selection of Apple Watch bands, iPhone cases, and iPad cases regularly, introducing new color options. We could see new summer colors for many accessories, and Apple will need to update its iPad cases to accommodate the new designs.
Vision Pro Expansion
Rumors suggest that Apple will expand the Vision Pro headset to additional countries before WWDC, and we're getting short on time. We could see Apple bring the Vision Pro to countries like the UK, Canada, China, and more as part of the May 7 event.
How to Watch
The "Let Loose" event is set to take place on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time or 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Apple will live stream the event on its website and on YouTube, plus there is an option to watch it on the Apple TV.

Best Mac Studio deals available now Macworld
Apple updated the Mac Studio in June 2023. The Mac Studio now comes with either a M2 Max or M2 Ultra chip. In our review of the M2 Max Mac Studio we were impressed by its processing power, port flexibility, and design.
We are already seeing some deals on the M2-generation Mac Studio. You may also find the M1-generation on sale and if you do you may find a good discount on that model, just keep in mind, if you are outside the U.S., that the old model already had a lower price than the M2-model.
If you want to buy a Mac Studio, and get the best deal possible, you’ve come to the right place. We’re looking at where you can buy the Mac Studio at the best price.
Best Mac Studio deals
There are no deals in the U.S. right now, but there are discounts in the U.K.
U.K.:
AO, Mac Studio M2 Max: £1,906 (£193 off, MSRP £2,099)
What you need to know
In March 2022 Apple introduced its most powerful Mac yet, and then, in June 2023 it updated it with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. At the same time, Apple also introduced an Mac Pro with the same specs (the M2 Max and M2 Ultra), but that model has some other features the Mac Studio lacks and a higher price.
The Mac Studio can be configured with a M2 Max chip, as seen in the 14in and 16in MacBook Pro, or you can choose an M2 Ultra, which is essentially two M2 Max chips. Read about how the M2 Pro Mac mini compares to the Mac Studio.
The Mac Studio starts at $1,999/£2,099 for the M2 Max model. The Mac Studio with M2 Ultra starts at $3,999/£4,199. There are also various build-to-order options. Note that the prices for the previous generation were lower, as you can see below.
The most obvious thing missing from the Mac Studio is a display, but if you want to buy Apple’s Studio Display we have a separate article explaining where you can get the best deal on an Apple Studio Display. Also read our Apple’s Studio Display review. and check out our Best displays for Mac round-up.

Where to buy the MacBook Air
You can buy a MacBook Air directly from Apple in the US or at Apple UK, but the stocks may be low and Apple very rarely drops prices – see Where is the MacBook Air in stock. You may however find a MacBook Air in stock and discounted at one of these resellers. There are plenty of stores and Apple Premium Resellers around the world that offer discounts on new and old Macs, so it’s worth shopping around (read our Where to buy a Mac article for more advice).
One benefit of buying from Apple is you could trade in your old Mac and get money off. We have an article explaining How to get money off with Apple’s trade-in program.
We recommend the following resellers in the U.S. and U.K.:
U.S. retailers
Want to buy a MacBook Air from Apple? View the MacBook Air in the Apple Store.

Best refurbished MacBook Air deals
The deals you will see above are from Apple resellers rather than Apple itself – Apple very rarely drops the prices of the Macs it sells. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t save money buying from Apple: if you want to get a discount on a Mac from Apple you can buy a refurbished Mac. It’s not only Apple that sells refurbished Macs, but Apple does offer some great incentives to buy from Apple’s Refurbished Store, so we do recommend taking a look there for great MacBook Air deals.
The Macs in Apple’s refurbished store may be ex-display stock, or they may have been returned to Apple due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a full year’s warranty. It’s not like buying secondhand. Read about buying a refurbished Mac.
In the U.S. you’ll find the following MacBook Air available in the refurbished store:
13-inch MacBook Air, M1, 7-core GPU
13-inch MacBook Air, M1, 8-core GPU
13-inch MacBook Air, M2, 8-core GPU
13-inch MacBook Air, M2, 10-core GPU
You can save as much as $210 off a MacBook Air with M2, compared to the original price.
Get a refurbished MacBook at Apple's refurbished store (U.S.)
In the U.K. you’ll find a slightly smaller selection of Mac laptops available from Apple’s refurbished store. Here’s what you can find:
13-inch MacBook Air, M1, 7-core GPU
13-inch MacBook Air, M1, 8-core GPU
13-inch MacBook Air, M2, 8-core GPU
13-inch MacBook Air, M2, 10-core GPU
There are savings of £220 off a MacBook Air with M2, compared to the original price.
Get a refurbished MacBook at Apple's refurbished store (U.K.)
You can get refurbished Macs from other suppliers too, including the following refurbished resellers listed below:
In the U.S.:
Apple
Amazon
Back Market
Best Buy
Decluttr
Gainsaver
OWC
Mac Of All Trades
Refurb.me
In the U.K.:
Affordable Mac
Apple
Amazon
BackMarket
Hoxton Macs
Laptops Direct
MacFinder
Mac 4 Sale
Music Magpie
Amazon also has a certified refurbished store for Apple products, but we would advise against buying any products that are older than five years – most of the products we see on the Amazon refurbished store are very old. Another place to look is BackMarket US and BackMarket UK, which sells refurbished Macs and other Apple products. We also recommend Hoxton Macs in the U.K.
Other ways to save money
Students should check the Apple Education Store, where they will be able to pick up a discount (as long as they qualify for one). Read more: How to get a student discount from Apple. There is also Apple holds a “Back To Uni” event which runs in the US from June to September (and in the UK from July to October) and means you will get free AirPods with your purchase!

12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th and 5th generation)

Naming things is one of the two hard problems in computer science, and Swift 6 has a “naming things” problem at the moment.
We’ve been repeatedly told that Swift 6 will include some changes that break source compatibility with Swift 5.x. That makes perfect sense, of course. That’s what a major semantic version should be used for. So far so good. 👍
But what I said there doesn’t give the whole picture, and that’s where the naming problem comes in. There’s the Swift 6 compiler, and then there’s “Swift 6 language mode”, and you can adopt the Swift 6 compiler without adopting the language mode. All the strict concurrency checks and data race safety features are in the language mode, and that brings the breaking changes.
You can start using the Swift 6 compiler now (or more likely when it makes it to a beta/release version of Xcode) and then opt-in to the language mode when you feel like tackling the breaking changes. There’s no imminent deadline breathing down your neck.
None of this is new news. The language mode has been talked about for a long time, but the distinction is subtle and it passed me by until recently, and you may be in the same situation.
A much better person to talk about this would be Holly Borla, manager of the Swift Compiler Team, and it just so happens we recently had her as a guest on the Swift Package Indexing podcast. It was a pleasure to talk to Holly, and we covered this issue in depth as one of several Swift 6 topics.
If you don’t already subscribe to the podcast give this episode a listen and consider hitting that subscribe or follow button in your podcast player. We talk about Swift (including server-side), the development of the Swift Package Index project, and package ecosystem topics. We also highlight a selection of community-written packages in every episode. Give it a try!

The curious case of Apple's third-party SDK list for privacy manifests
You presumably know already that the privacy requirement for app submissions came into effect two days ago, but there are some problems and Jesse Squires is here to dig into them. I can see his confusion around the list of included packages, especially SVProgressHUD and SnapKit being included where several popular advertising frameworks are not. I also agree that the lack of links to define exactly which packages are being referenced is baffling. Jesse has more to say, of course. I wonder if we’ll see changes to the list in the next few months.
As an aside, we should probably add some metadata to the Swift Package Index to identify these packages to people browsing the index. 🤔
