First Trailer for Ashton Kutcher’s ‘Jobs’ Biopic...
Now that Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs biopic has been renamed Jobs (from jOBS, a title I liked) and rescheduled for an August 16th, 2013 release, it's time for the trailers. The first one has been posted on YouTube, and it's a slickly-edited ad that focuses on the drama, some sex (somehow I suspect that's being overplayed), and the tension in Steve Jobs's corporate struggles at Apple. It also plays on some fan heart strings with phrases like "The Original Innovator," and "It only takes one person...to start a revolution." There are smashing phones, votes to kick him out of Apple, some screaming, and at the end, Ashton Kutcher reads the voice-over narration of "The Crazy Ones" commercial. In short, it's pretty cool. My favorite shot was Steve Jobs's eyeball reflecting the prototype for what became the Apple I TV display.

What Apple is ‘Interested in’ with the HDTV Viewing...
There was a time when many observers thought about Apple changing the way consumers watch content on their HDTV. Over time, it's become clear that the content holders have an iron grip on content, and so the new question may be: what can we do with that big display that we haven't been doing? Something that Apple is uniquely suited to do.

Oh, Snap. Apple Wins Rubberband Patent Case in Japan
A Japanese Court has ruled that Samsung is infringing on Apple's rubberband, or bounce-back, patent. The ruling came in the two company's ongoing patent infringement battle, and could lead to a ban on some of Samsung's Android-based smartphones in the country.

FAA Easing Restrictions on Inflight iPhone, iPad Use
The skies may soon be a friendlier place for your iPhone and iPad if the Federal Aviation Administration follows through on a recommendation to lift a ban on using electronic devices in airplanes during takeoff and landing. The recommendation is under consideration by the agency following a report from a 28-person advisory panel that said forcing passengers to shut off devices such as smartphones, tablets and ebook readers below 10,000 feet altitude has little impact on flight safety.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Stopping passengers from listening to music, reading ebooks and playing video games during takeoff and landing is a throwback to a time when far less was known about the potential in-flight interference from portable electronics, plus many airlines already offer inflight Internet via WiFi. It's about time the FAA made a change.

SMB2 & You: Saying Goodbye to AFP in OS X...
One of the biggest announcements from Apple with OS X Mavericks was not part of the WWDC 2013 keynote. Instead, it is buried deep in a technical document on Apple’s site. This is the announcement that the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) is being deprecated in favor of Server Message Block version 2 (SMB2).
While this announcement may not mean very much to general consumers, it is certainly going to be a large change for those who integrate Macs in enterprise environments. SMB2, also known as CIFS, is the main file sharing protocol for Microsoft Windows, and also has excellent support on Linux through Samba.
Apple has long supported SMB in some form on OS X, but as it was not the default, it did not receive the love and care that AFP did. In the past, Apple simply used the open-source Samba project to gain this functionality, and there was much outcry from many Mac admins...

OS X Mavericks Core Technologies Overview
Apple has posted a document highlighting the core technologies of OS X Mavericks, which includes some changes from Mountain Lion.
Among the new features is a change to the default file sharing protocol from AFP to SMB2. OS X has long supported SMB, but AFP has remained the default. AFP will still work, but with SMB2 now being the default protocol, interoperability in Windows environments should be much better than before.
It appears from the document that Time Machine, including to Time Capsules, will still be over AFP.
Coming to OS X Server in Mavericks will be Caching Server 2, which promises to speed up not just App Store downloads, but also iOS updates and iTunes.
Profile Manager also promises to become more powerful as an MDM, with the ability to manage Apps and iBooks for iOS, something that currently requires a third-party MDM.
There is much...

OS X Configuration Profiles review and gotchas:...
One of the issues Mac admins have with OS X’s Configuration Profiles system is that using OS X Server to build a Profile allows only subset of the management “scope” that is provided using MCX / Managed Preferences. Specifically, any configuration profiles made with Profile Manager are the equivalent of using the “Always” setting in Workgroup Manager.
Workgroup Manager also provided a useful interface (the “Details” view) for modifying exactly which keys are managed, and at the “Once/Often/Always” levels. This meant that one could take an existing set of preferences for system management and pare those down to a subset that can be assigned to a distinct “settings group”, which can then be included by other groups/computers, either using Open Directory or a custom Local...

Deployment: A Pedagogical Manifest(o)
Last Fall, a discussion arose on the MacEnterprise list about deployment terminology, with the term “thin imaging” coming in as the winner for variety of (conflicting) definitions. (You can read the thread from the beginning or jump on when the discussion turns to terminology.) I was starting to prepare my session for MacIT 2013 at the time and it made me think more deeply about how we talk about what we do. Much of our deployment terminology is anchored in the past by relating everything to “imaging.” That is a useful point of reference for those transitioning to more modern methods, but I would argue that we have reached the level of maturity in our MacAdmin...

Vendetta Online Adds Station Conquest
February 1, 2010 6:00 AM
Guild Software has added a new feature for its massively-multiplayer online space strategy game, Vendetta Online. Station Conquest gives groups of players the chance to attack a space station and take control of it. Planned updates for the new feature include holding territory around the station and manufacture of automated drones for mining.
This new gameplay mechanic allows groups of players to coordinate their attacks on a particular station, seizing control of it through the disabling of defense turrets, and taking direct ownership via a new "key" based hierarchical authentication system. Owner keys may then be distributed to other leaders, while various User keys may be generated and given to those needing only more limited types of access. The entire conquest system will be expanded over the coming months to allow surrounding territory to be held for the benefit of the station, while automated drones may be manufactured to mine ores...

- Plus, a review of Crush the Castle, a strategy shooter of sorts for the iPhone. See yon castle fair? Now go beat it down with thy trebuchet in tiny bits!
- Finally, a review of Groovin Blocks, a musical puzzler that brings new life to old Tetris-clones worldwide. Bring em down to the beat, and multiply your score. Because I love my C64. Well, that should have been one of the lyrics to the song, I think.

Todd Hollenshead Discusses id's Merger With...
February 2, 2010 6:00 AM
Edge Online recently published a brief interview with id Software's Todd Hollenshead. The game developer discussed the company's merger with Bethesda Softworks parent company Zenimax Media.
Of course, everyone looks at it as, Well, id was purchased by Zenimax! but I think its just as true that we acquired an internal publishing capacity, said Todd Hollenshead. Thats really what the relationship is. As much as we have valued our publishing relationships with other thirdparty publishers in the past, there is a difference, because we were separate companies. Although we were trying to work together, ultimately there is an idea that we have divergent goals.
Its actually worked out really well. They value development for its own sake, rather than just trying to put something in a box and relying on marketing for sales, said Hollenshead. They believe in the quality of the product you put in and the value of the entertainment the...

Battles are now a rich mix of different types of units and your headquarters can even be in the sea! There are over 70 new types of units, new technologies, and six gigantic mega units which are awesome in battle! I would list all of the changes, but looking at my work log there are over 800 of them! I will be working on the Mac version next and am still developing the game every day, so if you have any suggestions for the game please let me know. - James Bryant

As your territory grows, youll also need to keep an eye on the home front. Citizens taxed too heavily may threaten to revolt, while poorly-maintained settlements are more susceptible to plague outbreaks that will decimate their population and reduce the amount of Denarii they contribute to your coffers. Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning Reviewed
February 5, 2010 6:00 AM
Mac|Life has posted a new review of the Mac version of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. The game features Realm vs Realm combat and allows players to enter a grim fantasy world where the armies of Order and Destruction collide to determine the fate of nations. Mac|Life gave Warhammer Online a score of 4 out of 5.
From the review:
Really, the expectation is that youve played this kind of game before and know the implications of your decisions, so anyone unfamiliar with the MMORPG universe will likely stumble through their first 10 levels or so. The games main focus is realm-versus-realm and player-versus-player combat, where the two factions square off for...
