There's something your MacBook Air or Pro probably doesn't have, and that's a carbon fiber case. MacCityNet, an Italian Apple-focused site, has posted a video interview with The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg. He was asked about innovation at Apple, and at the 3 minute, 50 second mark, he said, "Apple is a company that’s a little bit like a Movie studio, it needs to come up with big new hits every few years and so things like wearable computing and the rumored IWatch, things like reinventing television which we know they’re working on." That's a great analogy and an accurate assessment. The questions are asked in Italian with English subtitles, or you can read the English version of the interview at MacCityNet.

Verizon is ready to drop US$130 billion to buy out Vodafone's 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless, giving Verizon Communications complete ownership of its cellphone business. The deal will be good news for investors, but will likely have little impact on the services for end users.

The Mac Observer Spin:
If you're an iPhone or Android user on Verizon's network, don't expect to see any big changes once the buyout is complete. If you're a cell service provider that's somewhere in Europe, get ready to be bought up once Vodafone has that $130 billion burning a hole in its pocket.

Microsoft Buys Nokia, Gets Serious about Smartphones...

Microsoft is buying Nokia's cell phone business for about US$5 billion and tossing in another $2.2 billion to license the company's patents. The deal throws together two big time companies that are struggling to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung, brings Nokia CEO Stephen Elop -- a former Microsoft executive -- back into the fold, and shows Microsoft is serious about playing in the smartphone game. All this as current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has announced he will step down within 12 months, although now it's looking like that may come much sooner than he thought.

Sudo Flaw Opens Potential Security Risk for OS X,...

A security flaw in the command line tool sudo in OS X 10.7 and higher, as well as some Linux distributions, could give unauthorized root access to user's computers. The flaw was reported by Metasploit, a company that specializes in finding security issues and building utilities to point them out, but the steps needed to exploit this particular issue make it unlikely most Mac users will become victims before a patch is available.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple isn't the fastest at patching security flaws, or even publicly acknowledging them. The company has known about this one for at least five months and hasn't yet released a fix. The upside for Mac users is that the requirements to take advantage of the flaw are so specific that most people won't be susceptible while we wait for Apple to get their security patch out.

T-Mobile Schedule Blackout Hints at iPhone 5S...

T-Mobile has apparently blocked employee vacations between September 20 and September 22, which would coincide nicely with the expected release of the iPhone 5's successor. Apple will be hosting a special iPhone-related media event on September 10, and typically new models ship about a week later, or in this case, September 20.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple hasn't confirmed new iPhones are coming, or that it is hosting a September launch event. Still, with the number of images and videos of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C that have hit the Internet most of these are feeling like rumors only in name. Rumors of T-Mobile's employee blackout dates fit, too, so there's a pretty good chance people will be lining up on September 20 to get their new iPhones.

iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives

If you store your iPhoto library on a volume that is formatted as FAT32 (a file system commonly used on Windows PCs), you may encounter issues including poor performance or data loss. Referenced images stored on FAT32 volumes may also sporadically go offline. Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.

Our culture has been, for a long time, immersed in war, weaponry, and computer-aided death, both in reality and in our entertainment. In the midst of that, Apple has come out with ads that remind us what we ought to be doing with our fabulous technology.  One reaction to that has been dismay and derision.  John Martellaro has some sharp thoughts on the matter.

Kevin Spacey Reminds Us (and Apple) That TV Execs...

One of the matras of the rumored Apple TV project is that Apple will somehow, through its vision, talent, customer focus and technical expertise give TV viewing customers what they want. Freedom, control and great stories.

Recently Kevin Spacey, currently famous for being a co-producer and having a starring role in Netflix's House of Cards, severely scolded the Networks for not giving the viewers what they want and for wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on pilots that never make the cut.

Mr. Spacey's speech is crisp, insightful and just plain terrific. And it could very well be a template for what Apple should be all about when it comes to its future with television. Mr. Spacey articulated the core issues brilliantly. The ball's in Apple court.

The evolution of our knowledge about a rumored new Apple product is an amazing thing to watch.  It's akin to scientific discovery. The best observers on the Internet steadily collect and assess leaked information and photos until the community has a fairly good idea of what the product will be like and why Apple is developing it. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to Step Down

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is ready to retire and plans to be out of his executive office within the next 12 months. Mr. Ballmer took over as CEO when company founder Bill Gates stepped down, and now he says Microsoft needs a new CEO on board as the company transitions into a devices and services business.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Steve Ballmer announces his retirement, and Microsoft's stock starts climbing. The idea that he needed to leave has been there for some time, and if the company's stock price is any indication, investors are practically dancing in the streets. Assuming Microsoft finds a leader that can bring a new philosophy to the company and stop the long time corporate culture that promotes fighting between division, other tech companies -- including Apple -- will see some serious competition.

Behold the $1,400 Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner

Hey, brother, can you spare $1,400? US, please. There's this desktop 3D scanner I need to buy. OK, I'll work on my begging pitch, but in the meanwhile, check out what has me drooling, the Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner from MakerBot. As you can see in the video, it's a laser-based 3D scanner small enough to fit on your desk (if you have a medium-sized desk or larger). That means you can use it to scan stuff—don't ask me what, because la la la I can't hear you!—and turn it into a 3D schematic that you can then send to a 3D printer! Cool, eh? For designers and engineers who make physical products, this could be a tipping point for inexpensive 3D scanning and printing. If you're rich, it could be something super awesome to impress your friends. [Via TechCrunch]

UBS Bumps AAPL Stock Target Up to $560 on iPhone 5C...

With Apple's stock topping the US$500 mark, and the prospect of the all-but-announced iPhone 5C, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich raised his target price from $500 up to $560. Photos and videos of the lower priced iPhone model have been circulating on the Internet, and he sees that as a big money maker for the Cupertino-based company.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Assuming Apple does introduce the iPhone 5C in September -- and at this point that looks like a sure thing -- then iPhone sales should jump up, just like Mr. Milunovich expects. That's good news for Apple, investors, and consumers that want iPhones but have been eying lower priced Android smartphones.
