iTunes 11.1 is available

The latest version of iTunes is now available for download. iTunes 11.1 provides Mac users with the ability to listen to iTunes Radio, Apple's new streaming radio service. There are over 250 pre-set stations to choose from, and users can create their own stations by simply entering the name of a favorite artist or song.

Genius Shuffle is another new 11.1 feature, providing a way to hear songs that "go great together." Each click of the Genius Shuffle button starts up a fresh shuffle of tunes so you can hear something new.

Are you a fan of podcasts? You can create "Podcast Stations" of your favorite podcasts that update automatically with each new episode. All stations, subscriptions and current play positions sync through iCloud to the iOS Podcasts app.

Lastly, iTunes can be used to Sync music, movies and other media to devices running iOS 7.

At publication time, the update did not appear in the Mac...

Apple releases iOS 7

iOS 7 has arrived. As announced last week, Apple on Wednesday released a major update of the operating system that runs on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Among its marquee new features: A new, “flatter” look-and-feel, with revamped icons, fonts, and other visual elements (less skeuomorphism); upgrades to such stock apps as Safari, Calendar, Camera, Mail, and Messages; a new easy-to-access Control Center, from which you can adjust commonly used settings without digging into the Settings app itself; improved multitasking; iTunes Radio; and, of course, much, much more.

(For details on all that, see our ongoing coverage of the new OS, including, of...

Common questions about iTunes Radio

Can I skip Songs?
Yes. You can skip six songs per station per hour. If the Skip Forward control appears dimmed and doesn't respond, you have reached the maximum number of skips for that channel per hour.
Can I repeat or replay a song?
Similar to a radio station, a song on iTunes Radio is played in real time. You can purchase songs you like directly from the station's history.
How do I fast-forward a song?
Similar to a radio station, a song on iTunes Radio is played in real time; however, with iTunes Radio, you can skip up to six songs per hour on a station.
Why does the music stop playing after two hours?
iTunes Radio will time out if you don't interact with your system or device for approximately two hours. If this happens, simply access iTunes Radio again and choose a station to continue playing.

Apple's AirPort Utility, iBooks updated with...

Sure, it's not the most exciting news to drop on this iOS 7 official "birth" day, but Apple has updated several apps to bring them into the brave new world of the new iOS. Both AirPort Utility and iBooks have received updates in the last few hours.

The notes for iBooks -- which seems to be sporting the same non-flat icon that it has since it first became an iOS app -- show that "This version of iBooks improves compatibility with iOS and iCloud." The app is still as Scott Forstall skeuomorphic as it always has been, complete with the faux wood library shelves.

For the AirPort Utility, the release notes simply say "Adds support for iOS 7." I'd let you know what that means if I had half a clue, but there's just not a whole hell of a lot of detail there.

If you're an iOS 7 user already and set up your devices for...

iTunes 11.1 brings iTunes Radio, Genius Shuffle,...

Just in case the imminent arrival of iOS 7 isn’t enough to get you pumped, Apple’s also gone ahead and released iTunes 11.1. Less exciting, you might think, but a necessary part of the equation: If you want to sync your device running iOS 7 with your computer, you’re going to need the latest version of Apple’s music-playing-video-watching-podcast-downloading-device-syncing-app-with-large-fries.

But that’s not the only new feature in iTunes 11.1. Launching alongside iOS 7, iTunes Radio makes its Mac debut here, accessible via a toolbar option in the Music section. You can browse through Apple’s featured stations or ones that you create yourself (and if you create a station on an iOS 7 device, it’ll automatically show up in iTunes Radio on your Mac, too). As on iTunes 7 you can tweak stations to your tastes, choosing from hits, more obscure songs, or a variety. Buying songs from the iTunes Store is as easy as clicking the price when listed next to the name of the currently...

iOS 7: Siri starts to shine

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Siri, Apple's intelligent assistant. While Siri hasn't yet become as smart or as useful as 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL 9000 (which might be a good thing), Apple has quietly added some new features to Siri in iOS 7 that turn it from a useful but sometimes frustrating beta app to a really helpful assistant.

Siri's new interface fits into iOS 7 better than the previous incarnation did in iOS 6. It literally fades into view on top of whatever you're looking at when you invoke Siri. You'll find that Siri answers your questions faster and usually more accurately.

Apple also has Siri check more sources than ever before, such as Bing, Wikipedia, and Twitter. That means that not only do you get more answers, but it's easy to get a second opinion on an answer. And most of those answers no longer show up in a third-party application - instead, they're displayed in Siri's new and beautiful user interface...

Clear for iOS 7 review: Slick to-do-list app gets...

Realmac Software’s Clear for iPhone has been among the most popular to-do-list offerings since it entered the App Store more than a year-and-a-half ago. Clear for iOS 7, a new $3 universal app from Realmac, expands the franchise to the iPad, and—in keeping with its predecessor—does so beautifully. (Clear for iOS 7 is a completely new app, rather than an update to the older version.)

Although labeled as being “for iOS 7,” and released on the same day as that new operating system, the app’s iOS 7-oriented features are mostly aesthetic. For example, there’s some use of parallax to add depth to what you see, as well as the capability to change text size using the iOS’s new dynamic-text feature, and the capability to change the visual theme...

iBooks for iOS Updated, Stays Skeuomorphic

Apple released iBooks 3.1.3 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch late on Tuesday in preparation for the launch if iOS 7. While the update does improve iOS compatibility, it didn't drop its skeuomorphic look and is sticking with its wooden bookshelf interface.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple treats skeuomorphism like a rash, so it's surprising to see that it's still part of iBooks. That probably means there's a really big update coming soon and that the current version of iBooks is getting little more than critical compatibility updates to keep in working until the complete redesign is ready to go.

iOS 7: The little things

With all the big changes in iOS 7, it's fun to look at some of those little, more subtle things that have been added.

Although it may not be a big deal to many people, I really appreciate that the photo that appears on the lock screen is now full-screen and not placed between black borders.

The clock app icon now shows real time rather than a fixed time as it did in all previous iOS versions. The calendar app has always shown the date. What's missing still is the weather app -- the fixed temperature is now gone in iOS 7, and what we're left with is a picture of some clouds.

The compass app also has some nice changes. The flat redesign is appealing, and now if you swipe the compass screen you get a built-in level. It's great for straightening pictures on the wall!

Folders have much more capacity now. Under iOS 6, you could place 16 apps in a folder. With iOS 7, I could place all the apps on my phone in one folder, although that would be a terrible idea....

Ars Technica Reviews iOS 7

Ars Technica has posted a pretty thorough review of iOS 7, which brings a few radical changes to at least the visual design of the system. From the article: "In one sense, iOS 7 changes nearly everything about iOS. A couple of wallpapers have made the jump, but otherwise you'd be hard-pressed to find anything in iOS 7 that looks quite like it did in iOS 6. In another sense, iOS 7 is the latest in a string of incremental updates. It adds a few new features and changes some existing ones, but this doesn't radically alter the way that you use the OS from day to day." Breaking with the design trajectory of the last few releases of most of Apple's software, the oft maligned skeumorphism of the interface has been considerably toned down.

Barnes & Noble has sent an email to users of the Nook iOS app warning them that they could experience incompatibility issues between the current app and iOS 7, reports AppAdvice. The company cites two issues to watch out for:

  • If you rotate the screen while reading, it may cause the page to render incorrectly or may cause the app to crash. To prevent this, we suggest locking the rotation while reading.
  • If you sign out of your app and then sign in again, the app may crash or you may have trouble accessing your Library.

The company says that not all users will experience these issues, and that it's working to release a fix as soon as possible. If you're a Nook fan, this is pretty depressing news as the company has had months to work out any...

Epson requires the user to download drivers for their printers from Apple. Often, Apple Software Update will report the drivers are not available at this time and send the user to Epson. Finding current drivers is difficult and registering the printer to the newly installed drivers requires one simple step...not covered in any instructions.

First, the user must be have an admin account. Download the drivers from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398 and open the install package. Follow the instructions to install the drivers.

Second, shut down the system and plug the printer in via USB.

Third, restart and log into an admin account.

Forth, (the simple, overlooked step) DISCONNECT FROM INTERNET

Fifth, If your system offers a dialog to add your printer, follow the instructions. If not, then open System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. Click on the + to add...

In what is undoubtedly the first of many Apple iOS apps to receive updates for iOS 7 today, the company Apple Store app [Direct Link] has been updated with iOS 7 compatibility, a new icon, and a "refined user interface" more in line with the iOS 7 design aesthetic.

The updated app appears to carry identical functionality to the previous version, although the company has been reported to be planning to push out a new tool within the app next week that will allow customers to check stock levels of the new iPhone models at their local Apple retail stores.

iOS 7 Control Center and Notification Center:...

My favorite feature in iOS 7 is the Control Center. Having such a feature was the one reason I jailbroke my phone under previous versions of iOS. No more; the Control Center handles almost all of my desires when it comes to instant access to my most-used iOS settings. The Control Center and the Notification Center go hand-in-hand, but let's take a look at the Control Center first.

Before you get started using it, go into your Settings and take a look at the Control Center options. You have two: the ability to access it on the lock screen and access within apps. I have both of these activated, but at the very least, I advise having the lock screen option activated.

There are five rows on the iPhone version of Control Center.

The first row features toggles for Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and the Orientation Lock.

The second row lets you set your brightness.

The third row is a...

Structure Sensor Turns Your iPad into a 3D Scanner

We live in SciFi times. I mean, really, George Jetson would be impressed. Tuesday's example of this is he Structure Sensor from Occipital, a Kickstarter project that turns your iPad into a portable 3D scanner. The device attaches to your iPad and you can use it to 3D map indoor spaces or capture 3D models of objects and people. The company is developing an API for developers to tap into the device, too. This is definitely cool, and lots of people appear to agree. Occipital had an initial funding goal of US$100,000, and in less than the first day, it's blown past that target to hit $200,000.  The early pledge offers were snapped up, but there are still some $349 pledges left that gets you a Structure Sensor for your iPad. Check out the movie for more.

So you've waited in line for an Apple product launch? Oh yeah? Well, have you waited in line during a hurricane or typhoon? A group of people waiting in line for Apple's iPhone 5c and 5s launch on Friday, August 20th, at Apple's Tokyo Ginza store can answer that with an affirmative, and they have a video to prove it. Fortunately, Apple took pity on them and invited them inside just before it hit.  Go ahead, Samsung and Microsoft, try and make fun of that, because that's all either company can do, make fun of it. No one is going to wait in line during a typhoon for a product launch for either of those companies. This could be a big iPhone launch for Apple in Japan because the company signed up DoCoMo—Japan's largest carrier—for the first time. Kotaku has more information (via AppleInsider).

Auris Skye on Kickstarter, an AirPlay Receiver for...

There was lots of grumbling when Apple obsoleted legacy speaker docks by moving iPhone and iPad to the Lightning connector, but a company called Auris saw some opportunity in that grumbling. It has a Kickstarter project called Skye that is essentially an AirPlay receiver for your legacy 30-pin Dock speakers. Slip it on your Dock the way you used to slip on your iPhone, and you then send music from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC (through iTunes) wirelessly. Android and Windows Phone are also supported through DLNA. It's Wi-Fi (rather than Bluetooth), so range won't be an issue in most settings. Auris is trying to raise US$56,000, and has already raised $21,800 in just the first day. Early backers can get a Skye with $64, $69, $74, or $79 (it will retail for $89). It's a pretty cool idea, so check it out.
