This is exciting news for iPhone and iPad users who receives long text messages from other iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. Reddit member AgentGinger149 discovered that the iOS 7 beta seeds allow you to view very long iMessages text messages in full screen mode. Compare iOS 7 Icons to iOS 6 Icons at Neue vs. Old

There has been much written and even more said about the icons in Apple's new iOS 7. Flat when compared to the icons in iOS 6, the icons dump depth for simplicity, and rather than textured backgrounds, they have either a monochrome or a gradient background. Of course, all that could change by the time Apple releases iOS 7, but someone has launched a site that will let you compare the major Apple icons and vote on which one you like best.  It's cleverly called Neue vs. Old, a play on iOS 7's use of Helvetica Neue as the system font. To start, just click on the icon you like best and you'll be taken to the next set. At the end you can see the results. Pretty cool!

What Apple’s Rumored Color iPhones Might Look Like

Martin Hajek has done it again. This time, he's conjured up some incredible renderings of not only what the rumored, lower cost, colored case iPhones might look like, he's even created an iOS 7-inspired rendering of what Apple's home page might look like as well. Mr. Hajeck's "iPhone budget" site even has a 3D model plus a file in .STP (NURBS) format so you can use a 3D printer to design your own cases.  It's color iPhone mania -- and very cool stuff.

Madrid Apple Store Construction Uncovers 15th...

Construction on Apple's flagship store in Madrid uncovered a special find: A 15th century hospital. The Buen Suceso hospital, along with a church next door, were torn down in 1854 to make room for a public square and the location was later the home of the Paris Hotel.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Finding old ruins like this is awesome, and it's nice to see that the location of the hospital walls will be outlined on the Apple Store floor. Time marches on, but offering up a little remembrance to the past, especially in a city with such a rich history, is pretty cool.

Apple to Appeal Ebook Antitrust Case Loss

Apple doesn't plan on accepting Judge Denise Cote's ruling that it conspired to artificially raise ebook prices and plans to appeal. Judge Cote issued her ruling Wednesday morning in favor of the Department of Justice and their claims that Apple was the ring leader in a conspiracy with publishers to force retailers into higher book prices.

The Mac Observer Spin:

Martin Hajek has conjured up a very cool alternative design concept for Apple's recently announced Mac Pro. What if, say, the outer casing were glass instead of aluminum? Also, what if the aluminum came in bright anodized aluminum colors? What if naked aluminum had thousands of pinholes? The possibilities are tantalizing.

In fact, a glass or plastic case, showing off the innards of a computer, is a time-honored concept. We don't know if the thermal properties would be right, but hey, it's just a very cool idea, beautifully rendered. To see more, check out Mr. Hajek's website. (All photos used with permission.)

It's a red LED laser pointer to be precise. Think Geek is selling a Star Trek, Original Series, officially licensed, "Phaser Laser Pointer" that will set your "corporate presentation skills to stun."  The acrylic tip glows when the laser is on. For the geeks: Class IIIA laser, 640 nm wavelength, less than 5 milliwatts. Note, however, that it's smaller than it looks, keychain sized, and is only 4.4 inches long.

Boston University Hits Apple with Patent...

Apple is facing another patent infringement lawsuit, although this time it's from Boston University instead of a company. The University is alleging that the iPhone 5, iPad, and MacBook Air use a semiconductor it received a patent for in 1997, and is asking for a ban on selling some Apple products as well as a slice of the company's profits.

The Mac Observer Spin:
With so many patent infringement cases happening we can only assume Apple's legal team is using something a little more robust that the Calendar app. Oh, and Boston University, welcome to the party. You're going to be here for a while.

The Federal Communications Commission has approved SoftBank's plan to buy U.S. cell service provider Sprint Nextel, according to insider sources. 50 Years of Sci-Fi Computer Interfaces

Computers are a big part of the sci-fi world and the interfaces writers, movie makers, and special effects artists for those thinking machines have led to some pretty prescient designs over the past 50 years. Infographic Journal has a great visual representation of some of the most popular interfaces from movies and TV shows that list both their vision and how they later appeared in the real world. It starts with Lost in Space, leads into Star Trek, Star Wars and Alien, looks at Iron Man, Tron, and Blade Runner, and even shows what smeggin' Red Dwarf got right.

An iPod Classic Visualized as a Vinyl LP Collection

"It's about the music, stupid," Steve Jobs once said (channeling Bill Clinton). He was talking about the iPod at the time, but for many people that's just as true for the iPhone. A site called ConcertHotels.com has put up a nifty (somewhat-)interactive graphic that visualizes what the music on a 160GB iPod classic would look like as a vinyl LP collection. It's pretty darned cool, at least to those of us old enough to remember the hassles of managing vinyl. We have a teaser image in the standalone article, or you click right on through in the link above. Check it out!

I've been a Vaja fan for a long time. I had a Vaja case for my Motorola RAZR, my original iPhone, and my iPhone 3G. I'll probably get one for my next iPhone, too, but they're a little pricey. That's because they're handmade from leather, and they're insanely cool. On Tuesday, the company launched the Ivo Top SP case for iPhone 5. The case encloses your iPhone when you're not using it—protecting the front, too—and the company designed it so that it offers protection to all four corners. You can customize it with more than a score of colors, and the racing stripe is customizable, too. Check out the different pictures on Vaja's site. It's sexy, and it's priced at US$120.

A Developer’s Thoughts on Designing for iOS 7

Jeremy Olson, founder of Tapity, has posted a fantastic blog entry on approaching iOS 7 as an app designer. Apple's shift from skeuomorphism to a flat, minimalist design means that hundreds of thousands of developers are going to have to think differently about their apps if they want them to fit with the new iOS. Mr. Olson lays out the challenges for developers, as well as the lessons to be learned about great app design. He does so by showing the evolution of Hours—a time-tracking app the company is preparing to release—and contrasts the iOS 6 design to the iOS 7 design. Mr. Olson believes that the transition to iOS 7 offers developers tremendous opportunity. We thought his piece was a very good read. Informative, interesting, well written...check it out.

Apple is offering independent music labels US$0.13 every time a song is played and 15 percent of advertising revenue if they sign contracts for its iTunes Radio music streaming service. The deal would give independent labels a better deal than they currently have through Pandora, and Apple's offer gets even better if they stick around for a second year.

The Mac Observer Spin:
If Apple wants to seriously compete in the online music streaming game it needs to make agressive deals to have plenty of content for subscribers, and it looks like that's exactly what the company is doing.

Blocking Galaxy S4 from Patent Trial Means More...

Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal has denied Apple's request to at the Galaxy S4 smartphone to its patent infringement case against Samsung. The Judge denied the motion saying it would put too much of a strain on court resources, which means we'll likely see yet another infringement case -- this time focused on the Galaxy S4 -- at some point in the future.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Think the patent infringement cases between Apple and Samsung will wrap up any time soon? Think again. Samsung will continue to crank out Android-based smartphones and tablets faster than the courts can react, and Apple will keep filing its infringement lawsuits.

Launch Shuttlecraft: Star Trek’s Galileo Restored

The Galileo shuttlecraft from the original Star Trek series survived the harsh vacuum of space and alien attacks, at least on a soundstage, but didn't fare so well for the next 45 years stashed on back lots and outside in storage yards. Luckily, a group of dedicated fans took on the project of restoring the crumbling set piece with the help of actual ship builders. The video starts with some clips from Star Trek, and the restoration itself starts at about 5:30. The fully restored Galileo looks fantastic, and is going to be available for anyone to see because the group donated the shuttlecraft to NASA's Visitor Center at the Houston Space Center.

OS X: Un-Group Mission Control Windows for Quicker...

Just like earlier versions of OS X, Lion and Mountain Lion lets users see all of their Mac's open windows with the press of a button. Mission Control groups all of those windows by application, but some long-time Mac users prefer the old show-ever-open-window-in-a-grid style view instead. Michael Johnston shows you how to choose which view Mission Control uses, and it's easy to do.

There are several ways an OS can telegraph the status of its health and well-being.  However, how that's communicated to the user, the developer and Apple are all very different things. Providing information to the Mac user that they can really use is a better approach. No intelligent agent required.

What Happens When You Tell Siri You Don’t Like Hew...

So what would happen if you were to tell Siri you don't care for her new voice in iOS 7? Reddit member Codyd51 did just that, and posted the results, results that show Apple's engineers have a great sense of humor. As you can see in the image below, her response was, "Oh yeah? Why don't you try multi-dactylic tansubstantiation of natural speech and synthesizing meta-diphones according to the phonotactics of the language using Karczyk-Nephelson's algorithm!? Sorry about that. I was upset." That's just too funny. Reddit member malchyk also told her that he liked her new voice, which earned an equally awesome response. Give us iOS 7 now!

Microsoft Shows Commitment to Failing Mobile...

Microsoft started its Build developer conference on Wednesday, and kicked the event off with the release of Windows 8.1 Preview, a sneak-peek version of the next version of Windows 8. As far as we can tell, Windows 8.1 represents a commitment to the failed mobile paradigms introduced with Windows 8, an OS that chiefly saddles tablets with Microsoft's desktop legacy of yore. A blog post from Brandon LeBlanc, a Communications Manager at Microsoft, talks about the release, including the really huge news that it includes the return of the Start button to Windows. Hoorah! Happy days are here again! Oh, and for some entertainment, note that the comments on the blog post are filled with people complaining about problems installing the preview or asking for help.  The video below offers a semi-tour of the new release.

iOS 7 App Store License Management

Apple has now publicly announced some of the new enterprise and education targeted features of iOS 7, and while all of the newly announced features are exciting, the most important one is the addition of App Store license management.  This will solve many headaches that organizations have encountered when having to deploy applications to users, especially paid ones.

Today, with iOS 6, if an organization wants to deploy a paid application to its users, there are a few options, but all of them have serious drawbacks:

  • Supervise devices, installing applications via Apple Configurator or an MDM solution.  This will get the applications on the devices, but users will be unable to update the applications as their Apple IDs do not own them.
  • Buy applications through VPP, and distribute the codes to users.  Users can then register with their Apple IDs, and...

The City of Cupertino will be streaming a public comment hearing on Wednesday, June 26th on Apple Campus 2, the Apple's so-called Spaceship HQ. This project represents a major endeavor for both Apple and Cupertino. The building will be large enough to house more than 13,000 employees, and it occupies hundreds of acres that used to house an HP facility. As such, it is subject to scrutiny and approval from Cupertino all along the way. The city council has posted a form that residents can use to submit their comments on the environmental impact—all of which have been published. The process also includes a hearing for public input, which is what will be streamed on Wednesday. It is not known who Apple will have on hand to represent its interests.  [Via 9to5Mac]

All the time. It's $59.99, and was originally funded via KickStarter. A single CR2032 watch battery lasts 6 months, and as you can see in the image, it's roughly the same size as auto key fobs. The app works up to 150 feet away. Hone is built in the U.S. Now, if they could make one I could dangle from my glasses, I'd be in business...

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple has the iPad, and Amazon has the Kindle Fire, while Google's Nexus tablets and Samsung's Galaxy Tab devices take most of what's left of the non-iPad market. With that in mind, it isn't much of a surprise that Barnes & Noble is throwing in the towel.

Japan Court Shoots Down Apple in Samsung Patent Fight

Apple's patent win in against Mirror Worlds in the U.S. this week was followed by a loss against Samsung in Japan. The country's Intellectual High Property Court chose to uphold a lower court's ruling that Samsung didn't infringe on Apple's media sync patents.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Try as it might, Apple can't win every patent case it has with Samsung. Losing its media sync fight has to hurt, but the interface patent wins Apple has racked up are probably worth more in the long run.

Supreme Court Hands Apple Final Win in Mirror Worlds...

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear Mirror Worlds' appeal in its patent infringement case against Apple, bringing an end to the fight and handing the final victory to the iPhone and iPad maker. The legal fight between the two companies started in 2008 when Mirror Worlds took Apple to court for allegedly infringing on its patents with the Spotlight, Time Machine and Cover Flow features in OS X.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Mirror Worlds kept Apple in court for more than four years, wasting not only Apple's money, but tax payers, as well. Since none of the courts invalidated its patents, Mirror Worlds is free to head back to the patent holder-friendly U.S. District Court in Eastern Texas for more infringement cases if it wants. Did we mention that President Obama has had his fill of patent trolls?

Siri Turns Proactive in Learning to Pronounce Names...

The folks at 9to5Mac reported that Siri will become a lot more proactive in learning how to pronounce names in iOS 7. This will happen in two ways: the first is that she will ask for pronunciation tips if she doesn't immediately understand you. Users will also be able to tell Siri "That's not how you pronounce [any name]" in order to start the same name-learning process. There's no word yet on whether there will be other ways to say it. This wasn't a feature announced by Apple—the company barely scratched the surface when showing off the new mobile OS—but it will be a welcome one that greatly enhances the Siri experience for all users as the data gets added to Siri's knowledge base. There are a couple of screnshots in the 9to5Mac story.

Growing Mobile Market Means Apple is Still a Winner

Mobile Device and computer shipments are set to grow this year by nearly 6 percent, and while Google's Android may account for a big part of that, Apple's iOS and OS X operating systems will take a substantial bite out of the market, too. Based on data from Gartner, smartphone shipments will climb 4.3 percent this year, while tablet growth will hit 67.9 percent, and Apple's OS X and iOS combo approach is working to give the company a growing piece of the overall computer market.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple has managed to carve out a piece of the market where it managed to be among the most valuable companies in the world based on a combination of profit margins and sheer number of devices sold despite the fact that more Android devices and Windows PCs are sold every month. That's a pretty good market strategy that Apple's competitors just haven't been able to copy.
