Macsimum review: HP LaserJet P1006 a dependable, low cost, personal laser printer
If you look around you can pick one up for around US$99. Not only is the P1006 inexpensive, but has a small footprint (14 x 9 x 8 inches), which saves on desktop real estate.
Which shows how things have changed. I can remember my first monochrome laser printer, which cost around $1,000 and was roughly the size of a VW Beetle. And I'm not THAT old.
Anyway, the P1006 is a no-frills unit with a maximum resolution of 1200 dpi (dots per inch) and a maximum media size of 8.25 x 11.7 inches. There's no wireless option, there's no support for two-sided printing and it's a bit loud when it prints. But it prints fast and is perfect for printing out letters, school reports, invoices and the like.
Above the feed tray is a special-purpose feed, which can take up to 10 sheets at a time. On the printer's top surface is a simple control panel, with power and data lights and a single button to cancel printing jobs. And the HP Laserjet P1006 connects via USB.
The set-up instructions are taped to the top of the printer. The P1006 comes with its toner cartridge in place, but you have to remove it to pull out the seal-tape and remove a spacer. After this just install the software and connect the USB cable when instructed.
As a personal, low cost laser printer, the HP LaserJet P1006 is a fine choice. It's easy to set up, is relatively fast and isn't expensive to operate. I'd recommend picking one up for your b&w printing needs and saving your inkjet for your color and photographic printing requirements.
