DVD+RW Alliance announces 4x DVD recording

The DVD+RW Alliance today announced the specifications for 4x DVD+R recording speeds, which will allow devices designed to this specification the ability to record at 5.5MB/sec, taking less than fifteen minutes to record a 4.7GB DVD+RW/+R disc. The 4x DVD+R specification has already been completed, and the DVD+RW specification expected to be finished before the end of the year. The group also announced 8cm DVD+RW/+R media, which offers 1.46GB of storage in a smaller form factor and allows new products to utilize the DVD+RW/+R format, including mobile devices such as digital video cameras. The DVD+RW Alliance includes Dell, HP, MCC/Verbatim, Philips Electronics, Ricoh, Sony, Thomson Multimedia and Yamaha. The DVD+RW Alliance competes with the DVD Forum, which pushes the DVD-RAM and DVD-RW/-R standards, and is comprised of Apple, Hitatchi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung, and Sharp.
