Motorola turns $2.3 billion loss

PowerPC G4 processor maker Motorola posted a second-quarter loss of $2.32 billion, or $1.02 a share, on sales of $6.74 billion. More than half of the loss was attributed to losses in semiconductor sales. Excluding charges, the company posted a small profit in the second quarter of two cents. Specifically, Motorola posted a profit of $48 million, much improved from the loss of $238 million a year ago. Analysts expected a loss of 4 cents a share. Semiconductor sales came in at $1.2 billion, down 3 percent from a year ago. “The segment incurred an operating loss of $1.3 billion,” a company statement said. “Excluding special items, the segment reported an operating loss of $79 million.”
