[MD1] Apple ships Cyberdog 2.0

Apple Updates Popular Suite of Internet Components: Cyberdog 2.0

CUPERTINO, Calif.–April 28, 1997–Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
availability of Cyberdog(tm) 2.0, an updated version of its suite of
Internet technologies for the Mac(r) OS. The software, which offers
enhanced functionality particularly in email and web browsing capabilities,
is available for downloading from the Cyberdog website
(http://cyberdog.apple.com) and is expected to be included with the Mac OS
8 release later this year.

Introduced in May 1996, Cyberdog broke new ground in the Internet access
arena by providing users with the advantages of flexibility and integration
on the Internet. With improvements in later releases, Cyberdog provides
direct integration of the Internet into the desktop. Cyberdog provides an
icon for Internet addresses (URLs, email addresses) and services (FTP
sites, mail trays, Telnet sessions) that can be dragged to the desktop and
organized in folders. With this capability, users can include Internet
resources along with local files and aliases to network information. In
addition, double-clicking these icons launches the appropriate Cyberdog
component to display the source information (a web page, FTP site, email,
etc.), just as double-clicking on a file icon opens the application and
displays the contents of the file.

Based on Apple’s OpenDoc component technology, Cyberdog provides users with
the unique capability to directly include Internet information into other
OpenDoc-based documents. Unlike the rest of the industry, Cyberdog allows
the user to work in a favorite application and include Internet resources
within that application rather than a separate browser. Like the initial
version, Cyberdog 2.0 integrates the following Internet components into one
suite: * Email * Web browser * Telnet, FTP, and Gopher browser *
AppleTalk(r) network, browser * Notebook * Log file * Newsreader

Cyberdog also includes DocBuilder, an OpenDoc application that lets anyone
quickly and easily create their own customized dashboards to Internet or
intranet information, providing users with one-click access to websites,
email, newsgroups, or other resources.

The New and Improved Cyberdog Cyberdog 2.0 offers the original features
that were popular in past versions of the technology, with new features
that offer a more functional user experience. Cyberdog 2.0 offers
significantly faster performance throughout the product, particularly in
displaying web pages and emails, and in switching between its different
components. Cyberdog 2.0 also works with SoftLinc LEXI spell checker, so
you can spell check email and newsgroup messages or DocBuilder documents.
User interface improvements and more consistent preference settings also
enhance the user experience.

Cyberdog 2.0 also includes the following features: * Email support
including text, graphics, enclosures, and live links (URLs, FTP etc.) *
Fast full-text search over email * Ability to handle multiple email
accounts * Multiple email trays and handlers for automatic sorting *
Imports information from other applications (other email and addresses,
Netscape bookmarks) * Seamless changes between web, Gopher, and FTP
browsing * Support for Netscape plug-ins * Logging of the last 100 sites
visited (Log can be viewed three ways and searched) * Storage of links
(URLs, FTP, AppleTalk server, etc.), email addresses, and aliases to local
and network files and folders in Notebooks * Organization of information
in multiple notebooks * Creation of Internet applications in DocBuilders
(includes CyberDocuments) * Viewers for all major types of media (PICT,
JPEG, GIF, TIFF, .WAV, .AIFF, and more) * Support for all Internet
protocols (FTP, Gopher, SMTP/POP3, etc.)

Developer support of Cyberdog Cyberdog’s component architecture gives ISVs
and developers the opportunity to create components that can replace or
augment the Apple-developed components. Users can easily select alternate
components that provide the capabilities they want. Several components are
available from developers today and can be purchased or downloaded from the
web. More information is available on the Cyberdog website.

System Requirements, Price and Availability Cyberdog 2.0 is currently
available for download from: http://cyberdog.apple.com for no fee and is

of 1997. Cyberdog 2.0 requires either a Apple(r) Macintosh(r), Power
