CNET News.com reports that Sun Microsystems has hired a new vice president of marketing for its Solaris operating system, luring Tom Goguen from Apple. “Goguen had worked for Sun on Solaris in the 1990s. He returned to the server and software company on Nov. 1, said Ingrid van den Hoogen, Sun’s vice president of brand experience and community marketing. In his time away from Sun, Goguen worked on two other operating systems that rival Microsoft’s Windows.

Sun Microsystems has announced a new version of Sun Java Studio Creator, its visual development environment, that brings support for Mac OS X and the Solaris Operating System (x86 Platform Edition). “This offering gives x86 and Mac developers access to the greater ease of use and performance features from Java Studio Creator and the Java platform.

Wired has published an interview with Bill Joy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems. In the interview, Joy discusses, among other things, his Power Mac G5 and Mac OS X. “I just got a new Mac with two 2-gigahertz processors, 8 gigabytes of memory, and a half a terabyte of internal disk,” he noted. “So you have the ability to hold a huge simulation all in memory — a database becomes a data structure.

Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice-president of Sun’s software group, recently told eWeek that practically every Sun employee owns an Apple desktop at home. “We would love to partner with Apple,” he said. “They’re everyone’s favorite company, and iTunes is really cool.”
