Apple today announced that more than 250 million copies of QuickTime 6 have been downloaded since its release less than two years ago. “QuickTime 6 is by far the most popular version of QuickTime ever distributed, with over 250 million copies downloaded and counting,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

QuickTime update patches security flaw

CNET News.com notes that QuickTime 6.5.1, which was released on Wednesday, fixes a security flaw that was found and reported to Apple in February by eEye Digital Security. “Playing a malformed .mov (movie) file could cause QuickTime to terminate (crash),” Apple said in an advisory published on Friday. However, the security firm claims that Apple is downplaying the seriousness of the flaw in its advisory.
