Attendance decline behind Macworld venue change

Several years of declining attendance and a soured relationship with Apple left the east coast Macworld Expo too small for the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, the Boston Globe reports. Attendance at this year’s show was just over 8,000, compared with 50,000 in 1997. “Based on feedback that we have, the show in its current size is not big enough” to fill the new center’s exhibit hall, said Warwick Davies, group vice president at IDG World Expo.

Microsoft, MYOB to exhibit at Macworld Boston

Microsoft and MYOB have signed up to exhibit at next month’s Macworld Conference & Expo in Boston as part of the Apple Specialist Pavilion. The Apple Specialist Pavilion will be located in Booth #302 on the exhibit floor at the event, which will take place July 12-15 at the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC). The Macworld exhibit floor will open on Tuesday, July 13. Sponsored by the ASMC, the Apple Specialist Pavilion will showcase products from a variety of vendors, including Hewlett Packard and Wacom.

Quark, Harman, Xerox coming to Macworld Boston

Apple may not be attending, but Quark, Harman Multimedia and Xerox have announced plans to show up at Macworld Boston, which will run July 12-15 at the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC). Other companies already slated to attend are: Alias, Belkin, Brenthaven, Disc Makers, DriverSavers Data Recovery, Guitar Center, Harmony Remote, Hash, Iogear, O’Reilly & Associates, Parliant Corp., Peachpit Press, Prosoft Engineering, Roku, Sassasfras Software, Software MacKiev, Sonnet Technologies and Unitek.

Macworld Boston may share expo space

When the Macworld Conference & Expo moves to Boston, Mass. this year, it may have a “neighbor,” according to the Boston Globe. Officials from the Mass. Convention Center Authority say they’ve reached a tentative agreement with SAP Worldwide, a Waldorf, Germany-based business software company that plans to hold its SAP Midyear corporate meeting inside the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston July 12 to 14.

Macworld Expo may not move to Boston after all

In an article for the Boston Herald this morning, Scott Van Voorhis writes that Macworld Expo’s planned return to Boston next year may not happen after all. According to the article, David Korse, the new head of IDG World Expo (organizers of the show), has “launched an in-depth study on the merits of New York vs. Boston.” In fact, IDG has already canceled a block of hotel rooms previously booked for the Expo period. Details emerge on Macworld Expo Boston

Boston mayor Thomas Menino and an IDG World Expo spokeswoman both said yesterday that the return of Macworld Expo to Boston is virtually a done deal, reports the Boston Globe. ”There’s still some T’s being crossed and I’s being dotted,” said IDG World Expo spokeswoman Brooke Selby. But she confirmed that the city will be holding a news conference on October 17 to announce that the show will be moving back to Boston in July 2004.
