Apple’s iMac G5 was one of eight winners in Business 2.0’s first annual Bottom Line Design Awards, which honor products “not just for their beauty but also for their commercial success.” The magazine said of the iMac: “With 15 of its iconic designs now included in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, Apple has adopted as its core value the idea that high style isn’t reserved for lamps and armchairs.

by Larry Angell – Apple has quietly announced that it is no longer taking orders for the current iMac and that a new model will be introduced in September. “Apple has stopped taking orders for the current iMac as we begin the transition from the current iMac line to an all-new iMac line which will be announced and available in September,” reads a note on Apple’s Web site.

by Larry Angell – Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich expects Apple CEO Steve Jobs to introduce a new iMac at next week’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. He says in a research note to clients that the flat-panel iMac is in dire need of an update, having gone 27 months in the current form factor.

Alex Salkever feels that Apple’s hugely successful iMac line is due for a refit. In his latest column for BusinessWeek, Salkever notes that “Yes, the iMac remains profitable. By how much Apple won’t disclose, but certainly the line provides millions in net profits. And the iMac remains an important part of Apple’s income stream.

“Apple iMacs are always beautifully designed, but the latest, a US$2,199 system with a gorgeous 20-inch flat screen (up from 17), is almost too striking to relegate to a desktop,” writes Troy Dreier for PC Magazine. “The super-sized display is a joy to view whether you’re watching movies, surfing the Web, or even crunching numbers.” Dreier rates the latest iMac 4 out of 5.

Apple won a Silver D&AD Award (Yellow Pencil) for its iMac G4 in the Product Design category at last night’s Design and Art Direction Awards, notes Macworld UK. D&AD describes its Yellow Pencils awards as “the Oscars of the creative industry.” Apple’s Xserve rack-optimized 1U server was also nominated this year, but failed to win.

Apple today quietly removed the original G3-based CRT iMac from the online Apple Store. The popular computer, which is credited for reviving Apple, continues to be available through the Apple Store for Education.

Apple has released iMac SuperDrive Firmware Update 1.0 via the Software Update utility. The update addresses an incompatibility with 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW media when used with the internal SuperDrive found in the 15″ flat-panel iMacs, and also fixes a problem with ejecting audio CDs that are copy-protected or have mastering errors.
