Apple announces .Mac enhancements, Backup 3

Apple today announced an update to .Mac, its membership-based online service. New features include: .Mac Groups, a service that helps members communicate, coordinate schedules and stay in sync with private groups of friends or colleagues; an updated version of .Mac Backup software that makes it easy for members to archive their iLife and other important files; a four-fold increase in combined iDisk and email storage to 1GB for individuals and 2GB for families; and full French and German localization.

Apple increases .Mac storage

Apple on Wednesday quietly increased the amount of online storage available to .Mac members. “The combined storage for your .Mac Mail and iDisk has been increased to 250 MB,” reads a note on the company’s web site. “That means you now have additional room for your email messages and mail attachments, web pages, and backups. Need even more storage? You also have the option of upgrading your .Mac account to 1 GB for US$49.95 per year.” Previously, the iDisk storage limit was 100MB and the email limit was 15MB.

New offerings for .Mac members

Apple has added two new offerings to its .Mac online service roster, including a special price for a one year subscription to MacAddict magazine (US$19.95), and a new file sharing downloads template. “If you transfer large files to friends, family and co-workers using your .Mac iDisk, you’ll want to start using the new My Downloads template in HomePage,” notes Apple.

Several MacMinute readers report that Apple has made available five new HomePage templates for .Mac members. New photo albums in the collection include the fun Kids Pink and casual Pushpin, while iMovie buffs can enjoy the retro look of the Projector template. Also available is the new Journal template.
