Report: Apple considering iTunes Store for Android...

According to a new report from Billboard, Apple is considering launching an iTunes Store app on the Android platform to combat declining music sales on the digital platform. The report also says that Apple execs are in talks with high level label executives to discuss debuting an on-demand streaming service.

Apple has opened exploratory talks with senior label executives about the possibility of launching an on-demand streaming service that would rival Spotify and Beats Music, according to three people familiar with the talks. Apple is also thinking about adding an iTunes App for Android phones, the Google rival that has been growing faster than the iPhone, these sources said.

The move to an on-demand streaming service could transform iTunes Radio from the Pandora-like radio model to the more robust on-demand...

Twitter Offers Trip Down 8-Year-Long Memory Lane

It's been eight years since Twitter first began to impose its 140-character regime on the social world, and to celebrate, the company this week launched a new, nostalgically minded tool. At First-Tweets.com, Twitter users now can fondly reminisce about -- and, of course, tweet and share -- what they said the first time they ever took to the twittersphere. By typing in any Twitter handle, in fact, they can look up any other user's fledgling comments as well.

The patent holding company SimpleAir has been awarded US$85 million in its infringement fight against Google. The company won its case in U.S. District Court in Eastern Texas -- a court that's known for favoring patent trolls.

The Mac Observer Spin: Just because Apple is fighting with Samsung and Google over whether or not Android OS infringes on its patents doesn't necessarily make SimpleAir's win a good thing. SimpleAir is just a patent holding company, often referred to as a patent troll, and its win only helps to line its own pockets and doesn't help to improve the overall patent system.

Opinion: Why the upgrade cycle means the ‘Apple tax...

Photo: mashable.com

I’m sure most of us have at some point had Windows- and Android-using friends ask us why we pay the ‘Apple tax’ – the price difference between an Apple product and what they perceive to be an equivalent competitor product.

A large part of the answer, of course, is that the competitor product isn’t equivalent at all. You can’t compare a MacBook with its premium materials, build-quality, high-spec components, screen quality and aesthetics with a low-end Windows laptop with plastic casing, low-spec innards and cheap and cheerful display. No more than you can compare an iPhone with a budget ‘droid. When you do genuine like-for-like comparisons with truly equivalent products, the Apple premium shrinks considerably.

But to get an accurate idea of the effective purchase cost, you also need to take into account both the replacement cycle and resale value … ...

Study examines replacement and upgrade cycles of...

A new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, via Fortune, sheds some light on customer behaviour of how quickly people get their iPad, iPhone or Macs upgraded or replaced. For instance, iPhones have approximate lifespans of two years, tied closely to when people’s contracts end. If the phone is in good condition, rather unsurprisingly, most people replace their phones alongside their new contract. Macs stay around for up to four years before being swapped out for newer equipment. The report argues that iPad life cycles more closely resemble Macs than iPhones.

However, in the case of loss or damage, people are much more compelled to replace their iPhones than Macs or iPads. Eighty percent of people replace iPhones within just two...

Fortune Names Apple CEO Tim Cook one of ‘World’s 50...

Fortune magazine released a list of the people it thinks are the "World's 50 Greatest Leaders," and showing up as #33 in the list is Apple CEO Tim Cook. The magazine cited Mr. Cook's "parade of winning new products" and his decision to hire Angela Ahrendt of Burberry to run Apple retail among the reasons he made the list.

The Mac Observer Spin: Not mentioned by Fortune is the herculean task of managing a company like Apple in the wake of its iconic founder's death and working in that founder's shadow. Few people could have done that job, which is likely one of the many reasons Steve Jobs hand-picked Tim Cook to be his successor.

Medium, the blogging service designed for (you guessed it) medium-length entries, has released its first iPhone app. Unlike most blogging apps, however, the Medium app does not have any writing tools. Instead, the app’s sole purpose is to provide a platform for reading the writings of other users. The app also allows you to bookmark and share your favorite posts and get personalized recommendations based on your Twitter account. You can grab the Medium app for free on the App Store.

Apple Pulls Fake Tor Browser After Media and...

Apple pulled a fake Tor browser called "Tor Browser" from the App Store on Thursday, a move that took almost three months of notifications from the Tor project, plus a little more than a day of media and security attention. The app written and submitted by someone not affiliated with the Tor project at all, and was reported to the Tor Project itself to be laden with adware/spyware.

The Mac Observer Spin: Seriously? This made it through the review process and after being reported to Apple, only got yanked after it was reported by the tech press?

Android-x86 Just Might Make a Good Linux Desktop...

Working with the Android OS on a desktop computer environment takes personal computing in a new direction. How many will follow it remains to be seen. The release of Android-x86 version 4.4-RC1 (KitKat-x86) by the Android-x86 Project brings the viability of an Android distro as an alternative desktop several steps closer, but it is still a work in progress. Christian Bale said to be 'first choice'...

Director David Fincher is considering Dark Knight and American Hustle star Christian Bale as his "first choice" to lead in Sony's Steve Jobs biopic, says The Wrap. Fincher is alleged to have met with Sony's Amy Pascal recently to discuss the possibility of his directing, but insisted that he would only direct if Bale can play Jobs. Fincher and Pascal previously collaborated on the remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Bale reportedly hasn't been approached yet, but mainly because he's said to be taking time off with family after finishing his role as Moses in Ridley Scott's Exodus....

Indie developer Nguyen released the game last May, having created it in just a few evenings. It suddenly surged in popularity at the beginning of this year, with many gamers becoming fans of its quirky graphics and simple yet difficult-to-master game play.

itwbennett (1594911) writes "For the past several months Tor developers have unsuccessfully been trying to convince Apple to remove from its iOS App Store what they believe to be a fake and potentially malicious Tor Browser application. According to subsequent messages on the bug tracker, a complaint was filed with Apple on Dec. 26 with Apple reportedly responding on Jan. 3 saying it would give a chance to the app's developer to defend it. More than two months later, the Tor Browser app created by a developer named Ronen is available still in the App Store. The issue came into the public spotlight Wednesday when people involved in the Tor Project took to Twitter to make their concerns heard. Apple did not respond to IDG News Service's request for comment."
