Self-Driving Cars Avoid Collision, as They Should

Two self-driving prototype vehicles, one operated by Google and the other operated by Delphi Automotive, earlier this week avoided a collision in Palo Alto, California. Neither car touched the other, but the incident spurred a number of rattled headlines over the so-called "near miss." In actuality, both vehicles responded as they were supposed to, the companies said in response to the media brouhaha. The incident occurred on Tuesday when John Absemeier, director of Delphi Automotive's Silicon Valley lab, was a passenger in his company's Audi Q5 as it drove along San Antonio Road.

What to play this weekend: Her Story

"Do you want to hear the story? It's a real life fairy tale."

Her Story (Mac and iOS) is a nonlinear jigsaw puzzle set in the mid-90's. As the player, you must find and review snippets of archival police interview footage to figure out what happened to a woman called Hannah in 1994. Those snippets are brief and jumbled together; only careful observation will allow you to uncover the whole story.

I took five pages of hand-written notes before I figured everything out. At 12:30 AM. I could not stop playing.

Even now that I've reached the end (there is a definite end), there's more for me to see, so the replayability is there. This will be a difficult review to write, as I don't want to give anything away. Here we go with my look at Her Story.

With Apple’s new subscription-based streaming music service launching early next week, the company is still seeking a producer for Apple Music to act as the point person for curating content as well as producing original content for the service’s streaming radio station called Beats 1.

The company is looking to fill the role of Apple Music Producer, which it refers to as a “definitive point person” for many design, UI, editorial, software, and marketing teams working on “important content and editorial initiatives within the music app.” Apple also notes that the producer will “particularly focus on original content and Beats 1.” While we knew that Apple’s...

Disney’s new iOS keyboard puts GIFs of your favorite...

Last year iOS 8 brought with it support for custom third-party keyboards. Some of these are designed to help you type faster, but some just make it easier to inject GIFs and other media into your chats. This week the cutest keyboard landed on iOS courtesy of who else, but Disney.

Just as its name suggests, the Disney Gif app puts hundreds of GIFs right inside your iOS keyboard. Choose characters and scenes from films including Star Wars, Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story and Frozen. Disney also included support for Inside Out, which is a no-brainer decision since its main characters — each representing a feeling — work perfectly as GIFs.

Disney Gif uses the copy and paste of iOS so it’ll work system-wide wherever that functionality is supported. It shouldn’t be too tough sifting through the bunches of GIFs...

Some iPhone users on T-Mobile U.S. network reporting...

This is a bit weird.

In the past few weeks, a growing number of iPhone owners on the T-Mobile U.S. network have been impacted by seemingly random crashes and reboots, without any clear indication as to why or how to solve the problem.

The problem seems to manifest itself with an iPhone briefly flashing a blue screen before resetting, according to reports. This can happen as frequently as every 10 to 30 minutes, even if a phone isn’t actively in use.

Some users have reported that disabling Wi-Fi Calling can fix the so-called “blue screen of death,” while others have scored success with a hard reset, and at least some T-Mobile support...

Apple seems to be partially walking back its recent efforts to remove all apps and games featuring the Confederate battle flag from the iOS App Store. Reports and public statements from Apple suggest the company is working to reinstate games that use the flag in an "educational or historical" context.

Apple's full statement on the matter, issued to many press outlets, reads as follows:

We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.

Despite that statement, yesterday saw the App Store removal of numerous games that use the Confederate flag merely to represent the Southern side in historical war simulations. As strategy...

Opinion: Why content-blocking on iOS means...

Ads are things we all love to hate. While some can be amusing, and others can be useful, drawing our attention to products or services we weren’t aware of, mostly we view them as things to tolerate at best – and to be profoundly irritated by at worst.

Some think they have a simple solution to this: using an adblocker. Adblocking software has existed for desktop browsers for many years, but to date there haven’t been any effective blockers for iOS.

All that could change with iOS 9, however, with content-blocking capabilities built right into the platform. If Apple chooses to allow adblockers into the App Store (and we don’t yet know yet for sure that it will), that could require advertisers, ad networks, publishers and readers alike to up...

Apple Pulls Games with Confederate Flags, but Leaves...

Apple is pulling games from the iPhone and iPad App Store that include Confederate battle flags in the wake of rising public distaste in the wake of recent hate motivated killings in South Carolina. While Confederate flags are disappearing from the App Store, however, apps with other symbols with hate-related symbols such as swastikas are still available.

The Mac Observer Spin: The Confederate battle flag was created and has represented racial hatred since its inception, so it's easy to see why Apple is taking a hard line stance in the App Store following the recent killings in South Carolina. It's odd, however, that Apple's anti-hate campaign is limited to only the one symbol instead of including others such as the Nazi swastika.

FLIR, maker of standalone and accessory thermal imaging cameras, has officially released FLIR ONE for iOS ($250), the improved sequel to FLIR ONE for iPhone 5/5s. Apple pulls 'offensive' apps featuring...

Apple is cracking down on apps that feature the Confederate flag in the wake of last week’s church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

The company is joining Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Walmart, and other retailers in taking a stand against the flag, which has become a symbol of shooter Dylann Roof’s attack on Charleston’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church. Roof is pictured holding a Confederate flag in a photo that spread quickly online after the shooting. South Carolina is now moving to ban the flag from its state Capitol building.

New iPhone app will help conduct the largest LGBT...

With transgender celebrities gracing magazine covers and the Supreme Court set to rule on gay marriage across the U.S., the LGBT movement has come a long way. But we’re still far behind when it comes to addressing the health and wellness of LGBT people.

To address that, medical researchers are launching a new “PRIDE Study” to shed some light on the unique health needs of LGBT folks—and they’re using iPhones to conduct it. A new ResearchKit app developed by the University of California at San Francisco will survey a wide range of LGBT folks about health issues like HIV/AIDS, smoking, cancer, obesity, mental issues and depression.

“The main question there is, what is the relationship between being LGBTQ—or more broadly a sexual or gender minority person—and mental and physical health?” Mitchell Lunn, co-director of the PRIDE Study at UCSF, told BuzzFeed News...

In an update on its website, the company announced that the final design for Reserve Strap will offer “more than 30 hours of additional usage,” or 2.7x or 167% of the Apple Watch’s built-in battery.

Latest OS X El Capitan beta build hints at 4K 21.5-...

It’s the beta builds that sometimes show the cool stuff that’s coming down the road.

The newest developer build of OS X El Capitan has revealed hints of a 4K 21.5-inch iMac as well as a Bluetooth remote control for the Apple TV.

The beta references Mac support for a new 4096 x 2304 resolution Apple-made display panel. While the larger, more expensive 27-inch iMac is offered with a 5K display, it could make sense for the smaller screen to be upgraded to a 4K resolution.

The beta also references a new Intel graphics chipset known as the Iris Pro 6200. This new, Broadwell-integrated graphics processor launched earlier this...

HBO Now, the standalone subscription service for the premium network, appears to be a hit with iOS users, says new data from analytics service App Annie.

After launching on Apple TV and the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in early April with a 1-month free trial, the new report says the standalone service’s app “debuted at #1 on our Worldwide May iOS revenue charts” showing that the free trial converted users to paid customers.

A month after the trial ended for day one subscribers, App Annie says HBO Now sat at “#2 overall daily grossing rank in the United States” according to its data. Showtime is planning a similar standalone service ...

Review: iHome SoundFlask iBT32 Bluetooth Speaker

As you can see, iHome's SoundFlask iBT32 ($100) is a Bluetooth speaker styled to mimic, yes, a (rather large) flask. On the front of the SoundFlask are a speaker grille and four LED battery indicators. The rear is covered with soft-touch faux leather. A simple set of controls is covered by silicone on top; another silicone flap covers a charging port, audio-in port, and a USB charging port on the bottom. The SoundFlask's body is trimmed with some chromed plastic to complete the look. In the box, a charging cable, AC adapter, and audio cable are included. We received this and a smaller version of the SoundFlask, the iBT12, but only considered the larger iBT32 version for purposes of this review.{/exp:char_limit}

Google, Apple, and Others Remove Content Related To...

davek writes with news that Google is removing results related to the Confederate Flag from Google Shopping, the company's online marketplace. They're also blocking advertisements involving the flag. They say, "We have determined that the Confederate flag violates our Ads policies, which don't allow content that's generally perceived as expressing hate toward a particular group." At the same time, Apple is removing from the App Store any games or other software featuring the Confederate Flag. This, of course, follows the recent shooting in South Carolina, which triggered a nationwide debate over whether the flag should be flown at government buildings (or anywhere). Major online merchant websites like eBay and Amazon have already taken the step of banning merchandise relating to the flag.

A data breach is no picnic for any organization, but for a company that makes its potato salad by protecting other people's passwords, it's the mother of all nightmares. Yet, that has happened to LastPass twice. In 2011, the service found anomalies in its network traffic that forced it to reset all its users' master passwords. To make matters worse, LastPass wasn't prepared for the traffic surge from everyone trying to change their passwords at the same time, so performance headaches inconvenienced users further.

Beats 1 will also feature celebrity interviews, beginning with Eminem on launch week. Apple bars Civil War games from App Store over...

The renewed debate over the Confederate battle flag is bleeding further into the digital realm this morning. As Touch Arcade reports, Apple seems to be removing many games that feature the flag's image from the iOS App Store, including a number of war simulations that use the flag primarily to mark historical context.

Touch Arcade reports that affected developers are being told that their apps have been removed "...because [they] include images of the confederate flag used in offensive and mean-spirited ways." But some game developers take issue with that characterization. "We're in no way sympathetic to the use of the flag in an offensive way, we used it purely because historically that was the flag that was used at the time," a developer from strategy game maker HexWar told Touch Arcade.

Game Labs' Maxim Zasov told Touch Arcade that he accepts Apple's...

Lexus Teases Smokin' Hoverboard

Some said it could never be done. Some said it would be at least another half century before someone could develop an actual hoverboard. However, Toyota on Wednesday announced that a division of its Lexus arm has built a prototype of a hoverboard, one that truly leverages magnetic levitation. Superconductors, cooled by liquid nitrogen, and permanent magnets give lift to what Lexus billed as one of the most advanced hoverboards ever constructed. Natural bamboo and a spindle grille give it what the company described as a "uniquely Lexus" look.

Artists to get their 0.2 cents worth during Apple...

With five more days until Apple Music debuts on June 30, details are beginning to come out about what exactly Apple will pay artists during the three-month free trial period. According to an article in The New York Times which cited music executives, the deal with record labels will result in Apple paying 0.2 cents per play for songs streamed during the free trial. That rate is on par with the free tier rates paid by competing services like Spotify.

Artists and songwriters will actually make quite a bit less; that fee is reportedly pre-tax, meaning that after value-added taxes are levied in European countries, up to an addition 25 percent could be lopped off.

Apple is also paying a smaller fee to music publishers for songwriting rights, with negotiations still underway as the date for Apple Music's launch draws closer. ...

External Link: Apple Bans the Confederate Battle...

Apple has removed from the App Store any app that prominently features the Confederate battle flag (though upon a casual search, there appear to be a few that Apple missed). The flag has been increasingly under fire in the wake of the racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, and retailers such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart have withdrawn sales of items depicting it. However, some say that Apple has gone too far, since the ban also includes a number of Civil War games that used the flag in a historical context, some of which were used by educators.

Beats 1 to feature celebrity shows

The launch of Apple's 24-hour global radio station, Beats 1, is still few days away, and The New York Times as a few details on what we can expect.
