Security Bite: Why your inbox is still so bad at blocking malware and spam
Many people are not aware that there’s a clever buffer that exists before emails land in an inbox. It’s here that each piece of mail is scanned, ideally blocking anything malicious before it arrives. However, over the years, email providers (mainly Gmail) have instead put more focus on adding “warning labels” to mail containing links or attachments they suspect are up to no good. Akin to putting lipstick on a pig. Despite these efforts, a stagering 91% of all cyberattacks still originate from an inbox. If you think Google, Apple, and Microsoft could be doing more, you’re right. So, why haven’t they? 9to5Mac Security Bite is exclusively brought to you by Mosyle, the only Apple Unified Platform. Making Apple devices work-ready and enterprise-safe is all we do. Apple's new M2 iPad Air has a nine-core GPU, despite original claims to the contrary
Apple has quietly changed the M2 iPad Air's listed GPU core count from 10 cores to nine cores, and Metal benchmark testing suggests that the nine-core spec is accurate.Apple has corrected the GPU core count in the M2 iPad Air's description. The M2 iPad Air was originally announced as having a 10-core GPU in its initial press release on May 7, 2024. The press release has remained uncorrected, as has an iPad Air support page, and all listings for the product in Apple Stores outside the US as of June 1, 2024.The correction, first spotted by 9to5 Mac, on Saturday is likely to be the true core count, with the original specs having strangely been in error. Geekbench's Metal benchmark testing of the M2 iPad Air shows a score of 41,095, compared to the M2 Pro's 10-core GPU, which rates a score of 45,195. Apple's AI Plans Include 'Black Box' For Cloud Data
How will Apple protect user data while their requests are being processed by AI in applications like Siri? Long-time Slashdot reader AmiMoJo shared this report from Apple Insider: According to sources of The Information [four different former Apple employees who worked on the project], Apple intends to process data from AI applications inside a virtual black box. The concept, known as "Apple Chips in Data Centers" internally, would involve only Apple's hardware being used to perform AI processing in the cloud. The idea is that it will control both the hardware and software on its servers, enabling it to design more secure systems. While on-device AI processing is highly private, the initiative could make cloud processing for Apple customers to be similarly secure... By taking control over how data is processed in the cloud, it would make it easier for Apple to implement processes to make a breach much harder to actually happen. Furthermore, the black box approach would also prevent Apple itself from being able to see the data. As a byproduct, this means it would also be difficult for Apple to hand over any personal data from government or law enforcement data requests. Processed data from the servers would be stored in Apple's "Secure Enclave" (where the iPhone stores biometric data, encryption keys and passwords), according to the article. "Doing so means the data can't be seen by other elements of the system, nor Apple itself." Read more of this story at Slashdot.
