Tenon’s iTools 5.0 Public Beta Now Available

Santa Barbara, CA, June 22, 1999. Tenon Intersystems today announced
a public beta of their new suite of internet tools for Apple’s
next-generation Mac OS X Server. Tenon’s iTools extends and enhances
Mac OS X Server’s networking performance, efficiency, ease-of-use,
and functionality with a family of tools essential to serious,
commercial web content delivery and eCommerce.

iTools is designed to overlay Apple’s bundled Apache. The internet
protocol software for Mac OS X Server as delivered by Apple has been
updated to the newest, secure versions (closing a number of security
loopholes) and extended with Tenon’s browser-based point and click
interface. iTools includes the latest Apache 1.3.6, DNS (BIND 8.2),
sendmail 8.9.3 and a multihoming FTP server (wu-ftp 1.3.4), with
built-in support for virtual FTP hosts, password protected FTP, and
anonymous FTP. Also included with iTools is mod_ssl 2.2.7 with SSL
3.0 to support multiple secure virtual hosts and certificates from
authorized CAs, Squid 1.1.20 for state-of-the-art caching and
advanced proxy services that augment the built-in Apache proxy
services, ht://Dig, a Sherlock-savvy high-performance search engine,
and support for WebObjects. All of the tools are supported using a
secure, point & click, browser-based administration tool.

iTools extends Mac OS X Server with anytime, anywhere WEBmail, a
fully customizable ‘hotmail’-style web-based mail service (based on
the well-known EMUmail 2.7) that lets users read their mail from
standard SMTP POP or IMAP accounts and also supports local ‘sendmail’
accounts, allowing ISPs to offer free mail accounts to clients. The
iTools Apache has been extended with FastCGI support to provide top
performance for WEBmail and to allow applications, such as the
popular WebCrossing, web conferencing software, to operate with
enhanced performance. WebEvent, a sophisticated web-calendar
application is included in demo form with iTools. When the final
version of iTools 5.0 is released other applications, such as
WebCrossing and WebCatalog, will be pre-configured as well.

iTools is based on standard, open source protocol implementation. In
accordance with Apple’s Darwin Open Source Initiative, many of the
tools will also be available with complete source code under GNU open
source licensing. iTools has been designed to support standard Apache
modules; any Apache module that works with Apple’s bundled Apache
will also work seamlessly with iTools.

WebTen 4.0, a point and click Apache for OS X Server and the
precursor to iTools, is currently being offered at the introductory
price of $299. All WebTen 4.0 customers will receive a free upgrade
to iTools 5.0 for Mac OS X Server. iTools 5.0 will ship in July with
a SRP of $495.
