Apple Announces Winners of 1997 HIDE Awards

“HIDE” Award Winners Display Outstanding Innovation, Elegance, Look and
Feel, and Overall Superior Design in Applications for Mac OS

WWDC, San Jose, Calif.–May 14, 1997–Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
the winners and runner-ups of its 1997 Human Interface Design Excellence
Award (HIDE Award; pronounced “Heidi”) contest for Mac OS developers. The
HIDE Awards illustrate Apple’s continued support for the Mac OS developer
community and recognize superior software from 1996 in the areas of
Innovation, Elegance, Look and Feel, and Overall Design. This year’s HIDE
Award winners and runner-ups were unveiled last evening at an awards
ceremony as part of Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC). The
WWDC takes place this week, May 13-16, at the San Jose Convention center in
San Jose, Calif.

Apple recently announced finalists for the HIDE Awards (see 5/5/97
announcement “Apple Announces Finalists for Second Annual HIDE Awards).
From the group of finalists, winners and runner-ups were selected in the
following categories: -Innovation — Interface design that stretches the
current state-of-the-art. -Elegance — Design that works with grace,
simplicity, and transparency to meet users’ needs. -Look & Feel —
Interface design that best embodies the principles and guidelines of the
Macintosh platform. -Overall — Design that achieves the best balance of
innovation, look and feel, and elegance.

HIDE Award Winners and Runner-Ups Following are the 1997 HIDE Award winners
and runner-ups listed by category. Winners and runner-ups receive the
right to use the associated HIDE prize sticker to market their products for
one year.

Most Innovative Winner: Kai’s Power GOO 1.0, MetaTools, Inc. First Runner
Up: Starry Night Deluxe 2.0, Sienna Software, Inc. Second Runner Up: YOYO
Telephone Manager for Macintosh 1.5.1, Big Island Communications, Inc.

Most Elegant Winner: Starry Night Deluxe 2.0, Sienna Software, Inc. First
Runner Up: CalcWorks 1.5.2, John Brochu Second Runner Up: AMBER: Journeys
Beyond 1.0, Changeling, Inc.

Best Look & Feel Winner: YOYO Telephone Manager for Macintosh 1.5.1, Big
Island Communications, Inc. First Runner Up: Adobe Illustrator 6.0, Adobe
Systems, Inc. Second Runner Up: Symantec Visual Cafe for Macintosh 1.0,
Symantec Corp.

Best Overall Design Winner: YOYO Telephone Manager for Macintosh 1.5.1, Big
Island Communications, Inc. First Runner Up: Starry Night Deluxe 2.0,
Sienna Software, Inc. Second Runner Up: Kai’s Power GOO 1.0, MetaTools, Inc.

in each area were definite stand-outs, said Cordell Ratzlaff, manager of
Mac OS Human Interface and coordinator of the HIDE Awards. “The Best Look &
Feel and Best Overall Design winner, YOYO Telephone Manager, from Big
Island Communications, Inc., offers a fun, intuitive and easy-to-use
interface for users’ telephone and telephone company services, along with
important features such as caller ID and paging.”

Continued Ratzlaff, “Kai’s Power GOO, by MetaTools, Inc., was selected for
the Most Innovative Award and is a creative entertainment tool with a
pioneering interface. It enables users to stretch, grow, animate and apply
a multitude of special effects to images. Starry Night, by Sienna
Software, Inc., is an educational astronomy program aimed at anyone
interested in the night sky. Starry Night received the Most Elegant Award
and does a beautiful job of making a complex subject simple and engaging.”
