Wow. Talk about differing stats. IDC has reported that Apple’s Mac now has 13.5% of the global personal computer market as sales rise 40.2% year-over-year. Canalys says Apple has 11.5% of the global PC market with year-over-year gains of 1.7%.
Now, a third research group, Gartner, says that in the third quarter of 2022 Apple sold only 2.8 million Macs for 16% of global market share. Gartner says Apple’s sales were down 5.8% year-over-year.
Worldwide PC shipments totaled 68 million units in the third quarter of 2022, a 19.5% decrease from the third quarter of 2021, according to preliminary results by Gartner. This is the steepest market decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s and the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline.
Gartner says the top three vendors in the worldwide PC market remained unchanged in the third quarter of 2022, with Lenovo maintaining the No. 1 spot in shipments with 25.2% market share. HP experienced a challenging quarter with a sharp decline in overall global shipments. HP recorded growth in select regions in the desktop market, but overall laptop shipments suffered declines.
The differences in the figures from three research group is why the old maxim, “99% of statistics are made up” has more than a bit of truth.
