Apple Glasses will purportedly require an iPhone to operate

A new report from The Information claims that the rumored “Apple Glasses” — an augmented reality/virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) — will have to be tethered with an iPhone to work, according to The Information.

About the report

The article says it will need to be wirelessly tethered to a phone or a similar device for the most advanced features, just as early versions of the Apple Watch required users to carry their iPhone with them. Of course, a similar device could include an iPad, as well.

The Information says Apple completed work last year on chips for the Apple Glasses. This includes the key system on a chip (SoC),  which has many different components of a device etched on a single piece of silicon, said two people familiar with the situation.

The SoC and two other Apple-designed chips for the headset hit a milestone known in the semiconductor industry as tape-out, which means the physical designs of the chips are complete and ready for trial production, according to The Information. The publication says the Apple Glasses won’t arrive until next year (at the earliest).

About Apple Glasses

The Information report is one of several about the rumored HMD. And many of the reports/rumors are contradictory. It will be a head-mounted display. Or may have a design like “normal” glasses. Or it may be eventually be available in both. The Apple Glasses may or may not have to be tethered to an iPhone to work. Other rumors say that Apple Glasses could have a custom-build Apple chip and a dedicated operating system dubbed “rOS” for “reality operating system.”
