The “iPhone 13” (or whatever its final moniker) will sport new camera features targeted to professional users, especially photographers, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

What features? ProRes for videos, Portrait Mode for video, and design updates, he says.

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks that, as usual, Gurman is correct. The features make sense as Apple consistently improves the cameras on its smartphones.

Apple ProRes is one of the most popular codecs in professional post-production. The ProRes family of video codecs has made it both possible and affordable to edit full-frame, 10-bit, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4:4 high-definition (HD), 2K, 4K, 5K, and larger video sources with multistream performance in Final Cut Pro X. This white paper provides in-depth information about the ProRes family of codecs, including technical specifications and performance metrics.

Portrait Mode allows you to control lighting effects with shadows, spotlights, and more. It uses the dual cameras on these Apple smartphones to o create a depth-of-field effect.

Gurman says the video version of Portrait mode will be called Cinematic Video. The iPhone’s depth sensor will purportedly create the effect and allow users to change the amount of blur after recording.

Other features of the “iPhone 13,” per Gurman, will be advanced photo filters, an A15 processor, a smaller notch, and displays with a 120Hz refresh rate.
