Study: Apple TV+ ranks sixth among SVOD provides when it comes to original programs

Reelgood, a movie and TV streaming search engine with over two million monthly users in the U.S. has released a new report on the state of SVOD.

SVOD is similar to traditional TV packages, allowing users to consume as much content as they desire at a flat rate per month. Major services Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV+, and Disney Plus.

At ViacomCBS’s quarter four 2020 earnings call, President of Entertainment & Youth Brands Chris McCarthy observed that reality TV is what sports fans are drawn to when they’re not watching the big game. Whether or not they’ve bought into this theory, SVODs definitely appear to be investing more towards the reality and documentary genres recently, according to Reelgood. In quarter one of 2021, subscription streaming services as a whole had almost double the number of reality TV shows they had in the first quarter of 2020 — 92% more, to be exact.

Not surprisingly, Apple TV+ is at the bottom of the list as Apple has shown little interest (thank goodness, in my opinion) in reality TV programming. However, when it comes to adding original programs and content, Apple ranks sixth for original TV shows added (following Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu).

When it comes to children/family content additions, Apple ranks ninth for original TV shows added (following HBO Max, Disney+, CBS All Access, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock Premium, and Amazon Prime Video).
