US Ignite, a non-profit organization “that fosters the creation of next-generation Internet applications that provide transformative public benefit,” has announced a new advanced wireless industry consortium (advancedwireless.org) to support the Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) program.

This partnership has been created to advance development of next generation wireless technologies and services, according to William Wallace, executive director of US Ignite. The program has the potential to result in up to 1000x improvement in throughput over current wireless networks, he adds.

This new consortium comes at a time when the federal government is also working to advance research and clear hurdles to advanced wireless technologies. Participating in the announcement of the consortium are: The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Science Foundation, and the Federal Communications Commission, DARPA, NTIA, and NIST.

Participating companies will help to sustain U.S. industry leadership, shape design of research platforms, assist in selection of platform participants and secure cutting edge research returns well in excess of initial investment, says Wallace.
