Intego’s Washing Machine is a great tool for tidying up your Mac. With version 2014, the software has been rewritten from the ground up, transforming it from an Internet security tool to a Mac utility.

Washing Machine seeks out and removes big, unnecessary files, freeing up valuable hard disk space and speeding up your Mac. It also features tools to organize the dock and desktop, and lets users create Smart Folders for quick access to frequently used files.

Washing Machine’s seeks out files you no longer use or need and quickly cleans them from your machine. These files include downloads, caches, logs and trash.

Washing Machine identifies duplicate files by analyzing the bits. It offers up the duplicates and lets you choose which versions to remove. Washing Machine also shows you which apps you use the most — and least — and lets you move them to or from the Dock.

Smart Folders created with Washing Machine offer quick access to frequently used files and applications. They can be added to Finder favorites. Washing Machine also moves files on the desktop to the appropriate Finder folders or the trash.

Washing Machine 2014 is now available at www.macwashingmachine.com and requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the software starts at US$29.99. A limited trial version available on the Intego site lets you scan your Mac to see how much space can be reclaimed and how many duplicate files are on your computer. However, you’ll have to buy the full version to clean items off your Mac.
