Kool Tools: Smoke 2013 Extension 1

Autodesk’s Autodesk Smoke 2013 Extension 1 is a useful upgrade of its professional video editing software. Among its outstanding new features is improved conform workflow with Apple Final Cut Pro X, which allows for more accurate translation of speed changes and ability to conform ARRI Alexa ProRes files.

Smoke software is designed for video editors who need to do more than just edit. By integrating a familiar timeline workflow and node-based compositing, Smoke smoothly connects editing and effects. Smoke video editing software for Mac has finishing tools for 3D compositing, color correction, and motion graphics.

You can use a familiar track-based editing environment with essential effects tools. You can move quickly from your timeline to a full node-based compositing workflow. And you can go beyond 2D layer-based compositing in the Action compositing environment.

Smoke 2013 Extension 1 also introduces support for Blackmagic video IO devices: DeckLink (PCIe video boards); UltraStudio (Thunderbolt boxes) and the Intensity product line. Other new features and improvements include: Trim View and new dynamic trimming tools for faster editing; support for SonyRAW footage from Sony F5 and F55 cameras; enhanced feedback mechanisms to help editors better track background processes, monitor renders and identify errors; beefed up performance in MediaHub when navigating large data sets; and better 3D compositing performance in Action when working with 3D objects, shaders and texture.

Autodesk Smoke 2013 Extension 1 is available to Autodesk Subscription customers. New customers can purchase a standalone Smoke license for $3,495 with an additional $675 for a subscription. A 30-day demo is available for download; go to for more information.
