Fuel cell maker Bloom Energy is the supplier behind Apple’s planned massive 5 MW fuel cell farm to be built at its data center in Maiden, North Carolina, according to “GigaOm” (http://macte.ch/XpLfh)

“Bloom’s fuel cells are large boxes that suck up oxygen on one side and fuel (natural gas or biogas) on the other to produce power,” the article says. “That means that with the fuel cells (and a solar array that will be built) Apple’s data center will have a source of cleaner distributed power that isn’t coming from the local utility via the grid.”

Apple’s North Carolina data center will be powered by the nation’s largest end-user-owned solar array, the company revealed last month in a report on its environmental footprint, according to “CNET.” The facility, which is being constructed in Maiden, N.C., has been awarded LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the company said in its latest “Apple and the Environment” report (http://www.apple.com/environment/).
“We know of no other data center of comparable size that has achieved this level of LEED certification,” the company said in its report. “Our goal is to run the Maiden facility with high percentage renewable energy mix.”
