InfoByte Software has released a multi-platform digital fingerprint calculator. It’s compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 and higher.

DigiPrint brings simplicity of creating and verifying the fingerprints (hashes) of any file on your computer system. The application supports MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, RIPEMD128, RIPEMD160, CRC16, CRC32 and ADLER32 hash algorithms.

It also provides the capability of HMAC (Hash-based Message Authentication Code). This is a specific construction for calculating a message authentication code (MAC) involving a cryptographic hash function in combination with a secret key. As with any MAC, it may be used to simultaneously verify both the data integrity and the authenticity of a message. DigiPrint also supports HMAC-MD5, HMAC-SHA1, HMAC-SHA256, HMAC-SHA384 and HMAC-SHA512.

From a file security and integrity perspective, the fingerprint of a file is a coded string of binary digits (generated by a mathematical algorithm) that uniquely identifies a data file. Used in detecting tampering of electronically transmitted messages, a digital fingerprint (just like the analog fingerprint of a person) cannot be reconstructed from any other digital fingerprint. It’s because two files that differ even by a single character will have completely different digital fingerprints.

DigiPrint is noow available from the Mac App Store as well as the InfoByte Software website (http://www.infobytesoftware.com). Single platform licenses as well as multi-platform licenses are available with pricing starting at US$9.99. A demo is available for download.
