Solarflare has announced support for Mac OS X. This will bring the high performance of Solarflare SFN5500 10GbE server adapters to the Mac OS X video production environment, as well as to other Mac OS-based work groups, the company says.

Solarflare will showcase its 10GbE server adapters at the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show in Arista Networks’ booth SL11205, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, April 11-14. The company will support Mac OS X 10.6 and above with its Solarflare Midrange and Enterprise SFN5500 family of dual- and single-port 10GbE server adapters.

Now, video content creation firms using Macs will be able to leverage fully 10 Gigabit networking. Content developers will be able to use Apple’s graphics hardware to create animated user interfaces and visualizations that simultaneously layer different media types, such as text, 2D graphics, OpenGL rendering and QuickTime video, all in real-time over 10GbE networks.

Solarflare’s SFN5500 server adapters feature numerous functions for the digital content creator, including support for a set of stateless offloads, such as TSO, RSO, IPv4/IPv6 and TCP/IP checksum. It also supports the acceleration of TCP and UDP application traffic with its OpenOnload middleware. The Solarflare Mac OS X 10.6 driver will be available later this quarter.
