iHome iD9 speaker system offers great sound for its size

Let me say upfront that the US$99.99 iD9 (http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iD9SVC/) from iHome has the best sound of any speaker system its size that I’ve tested. Volume is substantial, bass is deep and music tones are vibrant.

The iD9 is a rechargeable speaker system designed with the iPad in mind. In fact, it’s the first iPad speaker system I’ve had the chance to test drive. It works with the iPhone and docking iPod models as well, charging the iOS devices even as you play your tunes. The better-than-expected sound is due in part to SRS TruBass and Reson8 sound technology the speaker system sports.

The iD9 is also portable and has a built-in, rechargeable lithium battery. It measures 12.9 x 2.06 x 4.06 inches and weighs around 3.25 pounds.

I also like the design and details that iHome has put into the speaker system. The iD9 accommodates iPads in most skins and cases. If, like me, you plan to use it without a case or skin, there are two rubber bumpers that can be applied to protect the iOS device from scratches when docking it with the iD9.

The speaker system comes with an auxiliary cable so you can use it with a variety of devices besides the iPad, iPhone and iPod. Another nice touch: the iD9 works with the free iHome+Sleep app for custom alarm settings, social alerts and more, and with the iHome+Radio app ($1.99) for global Internet radio.

In fact, about the only complaint I have with the iD9 is that a remote would have been nice. As it is, you’ll have to manually change the volume on the speaker system and change music tracks on the Apple device itself.
