Report: flood of iOS, Android devices revolutionizing enterprise mobility

Good Technology, which specializes in multiplatform enterprise mobility, has released its first quarterly data report detailing how the rapid adoption of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android devices is revolutionizing enterprise mobility marked by a fundamental shift to device choice, multiplatform support, and the rapid adoption of tablets.

The “Good Technology Device Activation Report for 3rd Quarter 2010,” based on data aggregated from thousands of Good’s enterprise customers, illustrates this fundamental shift in the mobility industry.

“It’s an exciting time in the industry,” says John Herrema, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Good Technology. “More than ever, consumers are strongly influencing IT decision makers based on their personal mobility choices.  The adoption of Good’s by thousands of enterprise to secure and manage these new platforms gives us unique insight into the devices and platforms that enterprise end users are choosing and with our quarterly analytics program, we want to document this revolution.”

Among its many insights, the report shows that in less than two months from its late June launch, the Apple iPhone 4 became the most frequently activated device among Good’s enterprise customers. The iPad leaped into the top five very quickly as well, showing that enterprise customers want to use these new tablet devices for business. Android continued to grow rapidly as more new devices come to market, with the Droid X by Motorola ranked as the most frequently activated Android device in September.

Apple iOS devices represented more than 50% of net new activations from June through September. Android devices represented nearly 30%t of net new activations over that period. Windows Mobile devices represented 15% of net new activations over that period

Based on just a few models iOS devices continue to dominate Good Technology’s net new activations, due to the launch of the iPhone 4 and the steady climb of iPad activations in Good’s enterprise accounts. The Android OS, which is available on a wide variety of handsets and has recently added a number of tablet devices to its ranks, now represents close to 30% of Good’s net new activations, up from less than 20% in the first quarter of the year.
