Hulu not ready to move to HTML5 yet

>Hulu, an online site for watching television shows, says HTML 5, the standard for online video Apple is promoting over Flash, isn’t ready for prime time, reports “All Things D” (http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100513/hulu-still-not-coming-to-your-ipads-web-browser/?mod=ATD_rss).

The article says that Hulu product head Eugene Wei has this to say: “We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs. Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.”

HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the core markup language of the web. It’s touted as the next standard for HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and DOM Level 2 HTML and is designed to to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Sun JavaFX.
