“Take Control of Mac OS X Backups”

The second edition of “Take Control of Mac OS X Backups” covers the
latest changes in the backup world and adds major new sections

Ithaca, NY USA (January 26, 2007) — All Mac users know that they
should make backups, but many need help coming up with a plan for
ensuring the safety of important files such as irreplaceable photos
or deadline-driven projects. The second edition of Joe Kissell’s
best-selling “Take Control of Mac OS X Backups” helps readers
determine the best backup method for their data and budget, and
provides directions for setting up, testing, and maintaining a backup
system that can restore files after a hard disk failure, dropped
laptop, or burglary.

In significantly revising “Take Control of Mac OS X Backups,” Kissell
drew on years of experience as a Mac consultant and on reader
feedback from the well-received first edition of the book. The second
edition provides more detailed advice for backing up photos and
movies, and adds coverage about archiving old files, backing up while
traveling, and backing up files generated by running Windows on a Mac
via Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop. He also explains how Time Machine
(a backup feature that will be in the upcoming Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard)
will likely play into backup strategies.

The book includes coupons for $30 off Prosoft’s Data Backup, $25 off
the BackJack remote backup service, and $5 off backup hardware or
software at Small Dog Electronics.

Think Secret described the first edition as “an inexpensive,
attractive, and exhaustive resource, kept up-to-date by virtue of its
electronic format and made accessible to everyone. And everyone
should buy it and act on it, unless their data is entirely
dispensable. Highly recommended.”

“I am utterly impressed with the depth and quality of Joe’s
research,” commented Take Control editor-in-chief Tonya Engst. “In
this edition, he tackled tough problems like how to design a
foolproof backup system for someone else (he recommends SuperDuper)
and how you could (but why you shouldn’t) roll your own backup system
using Unix command-line tools. And, he continues to provide specific
directions for using EMC Insignia’s powerful but occasionally
confusing Retrospect.”
