Desktop Transporter 2.0

DESKTOP TRANSPORTER 2.0: “BEAM ME OVER TO THAT OTHER MAC, SCOTTY”

Coeur d’Alene (Idaho, USA), 9th of November, 2006=20
— DEVONtechnologies, LLC takes over distribution=20
of the remote desktop solution Desktop=20
Transporter and presents the completely=20
overhauled version 2.0.

Desktop Transporter is a remote desktop solution=20
that allows users to use other Macs on either the=20
local network or the Internet without physically=20
accessing them. Like the much more expensive=20
Apple Remote Desktop, Desktop Transporter shows=20
the screen of the remote Mac either in a window=20
or in full screen and allows the user to interact=20
with the other computer as if it was the local=20
one.

Version 2.0, which is, of course, available as a=20
Universal Binary for both Intel and PowerPC based=20
Macs, is a major update to the previously=20
available version 1.4. A new menu extra makes it=20
possible to access remote Macs without launching=20
the main Desktop Transporter application, while a=20
background helper application takes care of=20
sharing desktops even when the menu extra and=20
main application are not running.

Using Bonjour, the presence of a shared Mac on=20
the local network is made known, making it=20
unecessary to pass IP addresses around. In=20
addition, Desktop Transporter ‘survives’ Fast=20
User Switching. A shared desktop remains shared=20
even if the user switches to another user=20
account. This can, for example, be used to use=20
multiple accounts on the same machine without=20
actually switching back and forth between them.

Other features of Desktop Transporter include:=20
Clipboard synchronization for text and graphics=20
in both directions, hardware acceleration, and=20
support for non-English keyboards. The latter is=20
one of the main drawbacks of free solutions such=20
as VNC when used outside English-speaking=20
countries.

Desktop Transporter was developed by Norwegian=20
Mac developer Daniel St=F8dle. Mr St=F8dle and=20
DEVONtechnologies, LLC have signed an agreement=20
to distribute Desktop Transporter from now on as=20
part of DEVONtechnologies’ software portfolio.=20
The application has been re-branded and is=20
available now from DEVONtechnologies’ website.=20
All rights on Desktop Transporter remain with=20
Daniel St=F8dle.

“We are proud to announce this new partnership=20
with Mr. St=F8dle. It’s a perfect addition to our=20
product portfolio,” says Eric B=F6hnisch-Volkmann,=20
President of DEVONtechnologies, LLC. “Desktop=20
Transporter is a powerful remote desktop solution=20
with advanced features that we can offer for a=20
more than reasonable price. If one works with=20
multiple Macs, at home or in the office, or if=20
one has to manage a server somewhere else on the=20
planet, it’s such a smart solution with a an easy=20
to use interface and pro-grade feature set.”=20
Daniel St=F8dle, the developer of Desktop=20
Transporter, agrees: “Usability, comfort, and=20
powerful features were what I had in mind when I=20
created Desktop Transporter. I am totally=20
convinced that this agreement with=20
DEVONtechnologies will make it available to a=20
much broader community.”

Desktop Transporter 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9=20
later and a fast LAN connection is strongly=20
recommended. It is immediately available as a=20
free download from www.devon-technologies.com. It=20
must be purchased after the evaluation period of=20
four weeks is over. Desktop Transporter sells for=20
US$ 29.95 in DEVONtechnologies’ online shop.=20
Students and educators discounts are available.
