iTunes ‘owns’ UK music business

Recently published figures from London-based researcher Xtn Data indicates that Apple’s iTunes Music Store has a “larger share of the UK digital music download market than the rest of its competitors put together,” notes The Register. “Xtn’s research, based on a late September survey of more than 1,000 British consumers who buy music online and offline, puts ITMS’ UK market share at 54 per cent,” notes the report. “Its nearest rival, Napster, has just ten per cent of the market. British company Wippit, one of the longest running providers of legal music downloads in the UK, comes in at number three, with an eight per cent market share.” This comes hot-on-the-heels of Apple’s announcement on Wednesday that iTunes and iPod are both number one in Japan.
