Music industry seeks common download standard

The rumblings continue in the music industry’s desire to standardize the file format for online music downloads. “Jay Berman, the chairman of global trade body the International Federation of Phonographic Industries, said the labels would work together to put pressure on technology companies to establish a common standard for downloads,” reports The Guardian. Apple has stuck to its guns and refuses to open up its proprietary song format to other vendors, and threatened legal action against RealNetworks for “hacking” into the format and allowing its songs to be played on iPods (see related story).
