Apple files design trademark for ‘handheld computer’

Apple has filed for a European design trademark that shows what appears to be a tablet computer. “The filing, made in May this year but only published this week, covers a ‘handheld computer’ and contains sketches of what look like an iBook screen minus the body of the computer,” reports The Register. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said in the past that he has no plans to develop a tablet PC. “It turns out people want keyboards. When Apple first started out, people couldn’t type. We realized: Death would eventually take care of this,” said Jobs. “We look at the tablet and we think it’s going to fail. Tablets appeal to rich guys with plenty of other PCs and devices already. And people accuse us of niche markets.”
