Maine strikes deal with Apple for high school iBooks

Apple has agreed to a revised deal that will put iBooks in approximately one-third of Maine’s public high schools this fall. “I’m absolutely delighted,” said Education Commissioner Susan Gendron, who had been working with Apple to salvage the program after her department failed to sign up enough schools to account for the 8,400 laptop minimum. Apple agreed to lower its minimum level to 6,000 iBooks without changing its annual rental price of US$300, the same price it charged for laptops in Maine’s 242 middle schools. Gendron said about 35 to 40 of the state’s 119 high schools will take part.
