Financial Times on iTunes competitors

In an article published today on the Financial Times Web site, Scott Morrison looks at the success of Apple’s iTunes Music Store and surveys the landscape of the future of digital entertainment. With more and more rivals arriving to cash in on this budding market, Morrison says that Apple needs to continue to innovate and expand if it hopes to hold on to its commanding market share — presently about 25 percent of the digital music player market and 70 percent of legal downloads. “But unless it acts soon, Apple could see its commanding lead in digital music disappear,” writes Morrison. “The risk is that history would repeat itself, with Apple again relegated to the fringes of a booming market.”
