Analyst reaction to Power Mac G5 pre-orders

As previously reported, more than 100,000 Power Mac G5s have been ordered since the machine was introduced at the end of June. Charles Wolf, an analyst at investment firm Needham & Co. (who owns shares of Apple), told MacMinute that the pre-orders “represent the anxious customers, who want the G5 as soon as possible. But there is little significance in the number, as such.” Wolf noted that Apple has sold as many as 350,000 Power Macs each quarter in 2000 and a few as 150,000 per quarter earlier this earlier this year. “The real test will be the orders that flow in now that the G5 is actually shipping.” For Apple’s fourth quarter, Wolf said he is forecasting the company to ship “180,000 units, including G4s that have been selling throughout the quarter.”
