Console gamers gear up for online play

PlayStation 2 owners in North America will be able to play their games online come August 27, Sony announced today. The functionality will be provided through a US$39.99 connectivity kit that can take advantage of a customer’s current Internet connection. Additional details can be found in the press release. Microsoft recently announced that it would kick off its online gaming service for Xbox owners on November 15 with a $49.99 Xbox Live starter kit that includes a one-year subscription to the service. Sony’s online gaming model is not subscription based nor do gamers have to connect to any Sony network to play.
