Laptop sales continue to gain on desktops

The percentage of laptops shipped compared to desktop systems continues to rise, according to market researcher IDC. As reported by c|net, laptops made up 23.8 percent of worldwide computer shipments in the first quarter of 2002, up from 22.3 percent, 20 percent, and 18.2 percent in the first quarters of 2001, 2000, and 1999, respectively. IDC expects laptop sales to exceed 25 percent of total sales within the next three years. Sales of iBooks and PowerBooks comprised 28.2 percent of Apple’s sales in its most recent quarter, ending March 30.
