FCC exempts cable Internet providers from sharing lines

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted today to classify cable Internet service as an “information service” rather than a telecommunications service, ensuring that cable Internet providers would not be forced to share their access lines with competing providers, as reported by the The Associated Press. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet service, however, is classified as a telecommunications service and must be shared by the Bell companies if they want to be able to sell their Internet services nationwide.
