America Online may dump Microsoft browser

America Online is considering switching the Web browser provided with its AOL service from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to one based on the Netscape Gecko engine. Reuters reports that the change, if completed, could reignite the browser wars as the majority of America Online’s 34 million customers would presumably upgrade to the Netscape-based browser. Neither company would officially comment on the speculation. America Online, which owns Netscape, filed suit against Microsoft earlier this year alleging that Microsoft’s monopoly significantly damaged the Netscape product.
