Open, wireless networking not quite catching on

Wireless (802.11b) networks may be proliferating at coffeehouses and airports, but actually taking advantage of them is a trend that hasn’t yet caught on, according to a Salon article that takes a detailed look at the current state of the wireless Web. Furthermore, while numerous private access points can be found within range of public places, the vast majority prevent guests from accessing them, limiting the vision of a consumer-built wireless network. Meanwhile, the folks at Tech Superpowers — Mac users themselves — informed us that they have begun rolling out free wireless Internet access in the Boston area.
