New technology could significantly boost digital cameras

Foveon today unveiled the X3, a new image sensor for digital cameras that dramatically improves image quality without necessarily raising cost. Unlike most image sensors currently available that only capture red, green, and blue — resorting to software in the camera to extrapolate the other colors in the photo — the X3 can capture the three primary colors in each pixel of an image, significantly enhancing quality. A comprehensive New York Times article [free registration required] offers a more detailed assessment of the technology.
