NEXT-GENERATION INTERNET MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE IS FREE

Tribeworks Announces Open Source Software Community for Creative Professionals

San Francisco, CA (MacWorld Expo) — January 5, 1999 — Tribeworks,
Inc. today announced that iShell is now free to all users who
register at www.tribeworks.com. iShell is a powerful multimedia
development tool optimized for the Internet. Those who register,
automatically become part of the Tribeworks Free Member program, and
receive fully-functional software for Macintosh and Windows NT.

Additionally, Tribeworks announced a commercial open source
distribution model for its software. This model will quickly expand
iShell’s functionality while providing developers with unprecedented
customization. Source code will be available as part of Tribeworks
Full Member program.

“The rules have changed,” said Duncan Kennedy, president and CEO of
Tribeworks. “For the first time, creative professionals have a
choice. They can now build exactly what they need instead of
wrestling with the limitations of pre-packaged, closed-architecture
software.”

iShell, a professional-level interactive media authoring tool, offers
an unprecedented level of control over the assembly and delivery of
rich media projects and applications using Internet media,
full-motion video, or CD-quality audio. iShell greatly simplifies the
development process, and features seamless integration of all media
types supported by QuickTime 3 from either local storage devices or
the Internet. iShell is multi-platform, allowing creation and
deployment on both Mac and Windows-based computers.

“We are excited about how effectively iShell can integrate media
objects with QuickTime 3,” said Mitchell Weinstock, senior QuickTime
product manager at Apple Computer. “iShell opens significant new
opportunities for developers because it exposes the robustness of
QuickTime 3 media authoring and the ability to use QuickTime 3 in a
collaborative workgroup regardless of the authoring or playback
platform.”

Free Membership vs. Full Membership

Tribeworks is building a membership-based community around iShell.
There are two membership options:

* Free Membership makes a fully-functional Macintosh or Windows NT
Editor and Runtime available for free with registration. Runtime
executables must be registered and downloaded separately for each
project created. All technical support is self-service.

* Full membership provides, in addition to the product available with
Free Membership: extensive technical support, access to the source
code for the Editor and Runtime and iShell’s Software Developer’s Kit
(SDK), early seeding of new product versions, marketing support
including referrals and presence on the Tribeworks Web site, and
additional plug-ins and utilities. Full Membership is priced at
$2000, renewable annually.
